Chapter 12 - The Vanishing Witness and the Trap at the Wharf

Despite the monumental victory at the gala, the final chapter of the nightmare was not yet closed. While Arthur Blackwood and Donald Thorne were locked in federal detention, Vanessa Blackwood’s private mercenary network had activated their final, desperate escape protocol.

At two o'clock in the morning, Julian and Elena were at the Manhattan Federal Command Center monitoring the transfer of Vanessa Vance from the city holding facility to the maximum-security federal detention center in upstate New York.

Suddenly, the command center’s tactical dispatch radio crackled with screaming static and gunfire.

"Mayday! Mayday! Transport Convoy Alpha is under heavy attack on the West Side Highway! Multiple armored vehicles blocking the road! Smoke grenades deployed! They’ve breached the transport van! The prisoner is gone! I repeat, Vanessa Blackwood has been extracted!"

Julian sprang to his feet, his jaw clenching. "She's heading for the water. Arthur had a private luxury yacht docked at the Red Hook Industrial Wharf in Brooklyn equipped with international satellite scramblers."

"Julian, the federal tactical units are twenty minutes away due to the roadblock on the highway!" D.A. Sarah Lin warned. "If she gets beyond the three-mile territorial waters limit, we will lose her forever!"

"She won't get that far," Julian said, his eyes turning to Thomas. "Mobilize our private tactical team. Prep the interceptor boat."

Elena grabbed Julian’s arm. "I'm going with you."

"Elena, it's too dangerous," Julian insisted, looking at her with genuine terror of losing her. "Vanessa is armed, desperate, and has nothing left to lose."

"She threatened my father's life, Julian," Elena replied, her voice filled with an unbreakable, steely resolve. "She slapped me across the face and tried to destroy my dignity. I was there when this began with a broken glass at your wedding. I am going to be there when it ends."

Julian looked at the fierce determination in her eyes and realized that nothing on earth could stop her. He nodded firmly. "Then let's finish this."

Ten minutes later, Julian’s private carbon-fiber high-speed interceptor craft tore through the dark, churning waters of New York Harbor at sixty knots. The cold salt spray whipped against their faces as the dark industrial silhouette of the Red Hook shipping terminal loomed ahead in the midnight fog.

Tied to the concrete pier was the Black Sovereign—a ninety-foot black luxury yacht, its twin diesel engines roaring to life, preparing to slip its mooring lines.

On the aft deck stood Vanessa Blackwood, wearing a dark trench coat, clutching a duffel bag filled with bearer bonds and false passports. She was barking orders at three armed mercenaries who were frantically untying the heavy nautical ropes.

Julian cut the interceptor's engines, coasting silently alongside the yacht’s blind spot under the cover of the dense maritime fog.

"Thomas, take the engine compartment," Julian whispered. "Elena, stay behind me."

Julian and Thomas vaulted over the yacht's railing like phantoms. Thomas neutralized the two mercenaries guarding the starboard deck with swift, non-lethal precision before they could raise their weapons.

Julian stepped onto the main deck, his sidearm drawn and leveled directly at his fugitive wife.

"End of the line, Vanessa."
