Chapter 7 - Linda’s Desperate Blackmail and the Secret Safe

That evening, the forensic accounting team made a massive discovery inside the Pasadena estate. Hidden behind a mahogany bookcase in the library was a biometric wall safe registered exclusively to Linda Vance.

Under the authority of the federal search warrant, a master locksmith cracked the safe open in less than twenty minutes.

Inside, we found over $1.2 million in banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills, three fake passports bearing Blake Vance’s photo under various aliases, and five encrypted USB hard drives containing comprehensive blackmail files on several prominent local politicians, developers, and judges.

"Marcus, look at this," James Whitaker said, pulling out a thick manila folder labeled Carter Automotive Expansion.

I opened the folder. My jaw clenched.

For the past three years, Linda Vance had been hiring private corporate espionage operatives to infiltrate my automotive repair chain, stealing proprietary supply-chain logistics and attempting to orchestrate hostile takeovers of my independent franchise locations. Marrying Connor off to Madison had not been a romantic coincidence; it was a calculated, predatory corporate takeover from the very beginning.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was an unknown number.

I pressed answer and put it on speaker. "Carter speaking."

"Marcus," Linda Vance’s venomous voice hissed through the speaker. "You think you've won, don't you? You think because you have a few federal marshals on your side, you can tear down my family?"

"I don't think I've won, Linda," I replied evenly. "I know I have."

"Listen to me, you arrogant mechanic," she snarled. "I have copies of confidential tax documents and proprietary franchise filings from your company. If you do not withdraw the federal criminal charges against Connor and Blake by tomorrow morning, I will leak those files to the IRS, the SEC, and the national press. I will destroy your reputation and bankrupt your precious company before the week is over."

I chuckled softly, looking at the mountain of evidence sitting on the library desk. "Linda, you really should check your email."

"What are you talking about?"

"Ten minutes ago, James Whitaker forwarded the contents of your secret safe to the Director of the FBI and the United States Attorney General. Every bribe, every extortion scheme, and every fake passport you hid behind my daughter's bookshelf is now sitting on the desks of federal prosecutors. Your blackmail files are no longer leverage, Linda. They are your federal indictment."

May you like

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the line.

"See you in court, Linda," I said, and hung up the phone.
