Chapter 2 - Midnight Rendezvous with the Traitorous Bodyguard

I didn't take Madison to my personal residence in Bel Air. If Connor’s thugs were indeed watching my gates, I wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of knowing I had already recovered my family.

Instead, I drove straight to a secure, gated hillside property in the Hollywood Hills owned by Frank Rossi, my lifelong business partner and former Marine combat veteran. Frank didn’t ask questions. Within twenty minutes, he had unlocked the guest house, stocked the pantry, and stationed two armed private security guards at the driveway.

I personally bathed my grandson in warm water while Madison stood in the shower for nearly an hour, washing away three months of dirt, tears, and despair. I had Frank’s assistant bring over fresh clothes, organic formula, diapers, pediatric medicine, and four whole bags of groceries.

At 11:30 PM, James Whitaker arrived. James was a legendary corporate litigator—a man who had spent thirty years dismantling corrupt corporate takeovers with surgical, unfeeling precision.

Sitting around the kitchen island, James reviewed the preliminary timeline. "Marcus, if what Madison is saying holds up in court, we are looking at grand larceny, document forgery, fraudulent conveyance of real estate, extortion, and unlawful imprisonment."

"I don't just want them in court, James," I said, setting down a mug of black coffee. "I want them penniless, humiliated, and behind bars for the rest of their natural lives."

Suddenly, three heavy, metallic knocks rattled the front entrance.

Madison gasped and pulled Ethan tightly against her chest, shrinking back into the corner of the living room. James immediately stood up, resting his hand near his jacket pocket, while Frank’s security guard drew his weapon and moved toward the foyer.

"Hold on," I instructed the guard. I looked through the digital peephole.

Standing on the porch under the amber porch light was a massive, square-jawed man wearing an unbuttoned tactical jacket. It was Victor Ramos—a notorious private muscle-for-hire who had spent the last two years working as Connor Vance’s personal driver and "fixer."

I cracked the heavy oak door open three inches, keeping the security latch engaged. "You have five seconds to step off this property before my security puts a bullet in your chest."

Victor didn't flinch. Instead, he kept his hands visible and spoke in a low, gravelly baritone. "Mr. Carter. Connor sent me. He knows she left the Greyhound district. He told me to track her down and bring the boy back. He's preparing a full kidnapping report with his buddies at the LAPD Pacific Division to frame her by morning."

"Get off my porch," I growled.

"Listen to me, Marcus," Victor whispered, leaning closer to the crack. "Connor and his mother are playing you, and they're playing me. They owe me $2.8 million for illegal surveillance, asset liquidation, and intimidation jobs I pulled for them over the last eighteen months. Yesterday, Linda told me they were cutting me loose without a dime. They think they can discard me like trash."

"Why should I believe a word you say?"

"Because Connor has already hired a shady notary in Nevada to forge Madison's signature on a power of attorney document to drain her offshore trust at 9:00 AM tomorrow," Victor said coldly. "If you want the flash drive that contains every recorded phone call, bank routing number, and forged signature they’ve executed over the past year... meet me at the abandoned freight yard in Vernon at 2:00 AM. Come alone. If you bring the cops, I burn the drive, and you will never see that money again."

Before I could answer, Victor turned around, walked down the stone stairs, and disappeared into a black sedan waiting at the curb.
