Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Family Court

The next morning at 8:30 AM, the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was bustling with attorneys, bailiffs, and stressed litigants.
Connor Vance arrived dressed in an immaculate bespoke charcoal suit, flanked by his mother, Linda—dripping in diamonds and carrying an Hermès Birkin bag bought with my daughter's stolen money—and his younger brother, Blake, who carried a polished leather briefcase. They walked through the corridors with the untouchable swagger of high-society predators.
"Did Victor confirm the girl is still wandering the streets?" Linda whispered to Connor as they approached the elevator.
"She has no money, no phone, and no roof over her head, Mother," Connor chuckled smugly. "By noon, the police will pick her up for vagrancy, and Judge Henderson will award me full custody of Ethan. Old man Carter has no idea she's even in town."
They stepped into the private conference room adjacent to Courtroom 412, where Judge Donald Henderson was already waiting off the record, sipping an expensive espresso.
"Donald," Linda purred, walking right up to the judge and kissing his cheek. "We have the emergency declaration ready. Madison Vance has suffered a complete psychotic break. We need the immediate temporary custody order signed so we can secure the baby."
"Everything is prepared, Linda," Judge Henderson said smoothly, sliding a document across the polished mahogany table. "Just provide Blake’s notary verification that Madison was served notice, and I’ll execute the warrant for the child’s recovery."
Blake opened his briefcase with a grin. "Signed and stamped right here, Your Honor."
Before the judge’s pen could touch the paper, the double doors of the conference room swung open with a resounding bang that echoed down the marble hallway.
"Put that pen down, Henderson, before you spend the next two decades in federal prison," a booming voice commanded.
Linda, Connor, and Blake spun around in shock.
Standing in the doorway was James Whitaker, backed by four senior investigators from the California Department of Justice, two armed federal marshals, and me.
Behind us walked Madison. She was dressed in a tailored navy blue designer suit, her hair elegantly styled, holding a smiling Ethan in her arms. Her posture was erect, her eyes fierce and unwavering.

Connor’s face turned as white as a sheet. "Madison?! Marcus?! What is the meaning of this intrusion?!"
"Shut your mouth, Connor," I said, stepping into the room and staring him dead in the eye. "Your little game is over."
