Chapter 3 - The Secret Safe and the $16.7 Million Heist

James Whitaker immediately objected. "Marcus, this is an obvious trap. Victor Ramos is a convicted felon. He could be luring you into an ambush to eliminate you and leave Madison completely defenseless."
"I’m not an idiot, James," I replied, grabbing my leather jacket. "Frank is coming with me. We’ll have four men with thermal optics covering every angle of that rail yard. If Victor sneezes wrong, he goes down."
At 1:50 AM, Frank and I arrived at the Vernon industrial complex. The abandoned shipping containers cast long, eerie shadows under the amber glow of the distant city lights.
Victor stepped out from behind a rusted train car, holding a heavy metal lockbox.
"You're late, Carter," Victor muttered.
"Cut the garbage, Victor," I said, stepping forward while Frank stood beside me, his hand resting conspicuously on his hip holster. "Show me what you have, or I leave you to rot when the Vance family goes down."
Victor placed the lockbox on the hood of my truck and popped the latches. Inside were stacks of certified bank ledgers, encrypted hard drives, audio recording tapes, and original notarized documents bearing my daughter's forged signature.
"It wasn't just the nine-million-dollar Pasadena house," Victor explained, tapping a thick stack of wire transfer confirmations. "Connor and his mother have been siphoning money from Madison’s private accounts for fourteen months. They set up three dummy corporations in Delaware: Apex Global Holdings, Silverline Asset Management, and Vance Crest LLC."
James, whom I had put on speakerphone via my Bluetooth earpiece, whistled sharply. "What's the total sum, Victor?"
"Sixteen million, seven hundred and forty thousand dollars," Victor said deadpan. "They drained her mother’s inheritance fund, the venture capital reserve Marcus set up for her, and the high-yield savings account intended for Ethan’s education. They used the stolen cash to buy a sixty-foot yacht in Newport Beach, two commercial buildings in Glendale, and a portfolio of cryptocurrency."
"And what about tomorrow morning?" I asked, my blood boiling.
"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, Linda Vance is meeting with Judge Donald Henderson in his private chambers," Victor revealed. "Henderson is on their payroll. They are going to present an emergency petition for full, sole legal and physical custody of Ethan, citing Madison's 'abandonment' and 'severe psychiatric delusions.' Once they have Ethan, Madison loses all legal standing as a mother, and they gain permanent legal control over the remaining family trusts."

I took the lockbox, closed the lid, and handed Victor a cashier's check for fifty thousand dollars. "This is a down payment for your cooperation. You testify against Connor, Linda, and Blake in federal court, and you give us every password to those drives. You do that, and I make sure you get immunity from the district attorney. You cross me, and I will make sure you spend thirty years in Pelican Bay."
Victor looked at the check, then looked up into my eyes. "Deal, Mr. Carter. Bring those bastards down."
