Chapter 7 - The Corporate GuillotineThe next forty-eight hours were a grueling descent into high-stakes corporate warfare. Eleanor Vance was not a woman who made empty threats. With the infinite backing of Vanguard’s billions, she launched a coordinated, ruthless assault on Elysium Estates.

By Tuesday morning, my high-rise office was in absolute chaos.

"They outbid us on the waterfront property," my lead architect, Marcus, groaned, pacing the length of my glass-walled boardroom. "We offered twenty million. Vanguard swooped in at midnight and offered thirty-five in pure cash. It’s entirely irrational. They are going to lose millions on that land!"

"They don't care about the profit margins, Marcus," Julian said grimly, sitting at the head of the mahogany table, reviewing a stack of legal injunctions. "This isn't about real estate. This is a targeted assassination of Elena’s company. Eleanor is burning her own money just to starve us of new development projects."

My phone rang incessantly. Three of our primary investors had called within the hour, panicked by the aggressive smear campaign Vanguard’s PR team had launched in the morning papers. They were planting fake stories, alleging that Elysium used substandard building materials and was on the verge of federal bankruptcy.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline, feeling the familiar, suffocating weight of David’s manipulation attempting to pull me back into the dark.

"David is feeding her our internal data," I said, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "Eleanor knew our exact maximum bid for the waterfront property. That’s how she knew precisely what number to beat."

"That’s impossible," Julian frowned, his lawyer instincts flaring. "David has been locked out of your life for over a year. He has absolutely zero access to your corporate servers."

"He doesn't need access to the servers if he has access to a person," I whispered, a cold knot forming in my stomach.

I walked out of the boardroom and marched directly toward the marketing department. I scanned the cubicles until my eyes landed on a young, ambitious junior executive named Sarah. I had hired Sarah six months ago as a favor to a friend. She was bright, capable, and had full clearance to our financial bidding strategies.

I didn't yell. I didn't cause a scene. I walked up to her desk, leaned down, and spoke in a voice so quiet it was terrifying.

"Sarah, I need you in my office. Now."

Once the heavy oak doors of my office were shut, Julian stood by the exit, acting as an impenetrable guard. Sarah stood in the center of the room, trembling slightly.

"I am going to ask you one question," I said, sitting behind my desk, projecting an aura of absolute, unwavering authority. "And if you lie to me, Julian will have the federal authorities arrest you for corporate espionage before you can even pack your desk. How much is David paying you?"

Sarah burst into tears, her face crumbling in instant defeat. "I’m so sorry! I didn't want to! He cornered me at a coffee shop last month. He knew about my mother’s medical bills. He offered me fifty thousand dollars in cash just to forward him the sealed bid numbers. He said it wouldn't hurt anyone!"

The betrayal stung, but I didn't have time for emotional casualties. I needed leverage.

"You committed a federal felony, Sarah," Julian said coldly. "Vanguard is a publicly traded company. Utilizing stolen insider information to outbid competitors violates half a dozen SEC regulations."

"Please don't send me to jail!" Sarah sobbed, dropping into a chair. "I’ll do anything!"

I looked at Julian, a fierce, calculating fire igniting in my chest. David thought he was a mastermind for finding a mole. He didn't realize he had just handed me the exact weapon I needed to destroy his new billionaire fiancée.

"I’m not going to fire you, Sarah," I said smoothly, leaning over the desk. "In fact, you are going to keep your job, and you are going to keep talking to David. But from now on, you don't give him the real numbers. You give him the numbers I tell you to give him."
