Chapter 4 - The Mistress’s Exit

Desperate, broke, and terrified, David drove straight to Melissa’s luxury high-rise apartment. He had bought her the lease, furnished the penthouse, and paid her bills for a year. He genuinely believed that their "complicated, deep connection" would sustain them through this temporary financial crisis.
He keyed into the apartment to find Melissa frantically shoving designer handbags and expensive shoes into a massive suitcase.
“Melissa, thank God,” David gasped, his chest heaving as he walked into the living room. “My wife completely blindsided me. She froze the accounts. It’s going to take months to untangle this in court. I need to stay here for a while until my lawyers figure this out.”
Melissa stopped packing. She turned to look at the man she had been sleeping with for a year. The adoring, sweet facade she had worn at the wedding was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating glare.
“You can't stay here, David,” she snapped, zipping up a bag.
“What? Why not? I pay the rent!”
“Not anymore, you don't,” Melissa laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Your platinum card declined at Neiman Marcus an hour ago. The leasing office just called me and said the automatic rent payment bounced. I am not going down with your sinking ship.”
“But… you love me!” David pleaded, the pathetic reality of his choices finally crashing down on him. “I ruined my daughter’s wedding for you! I lost my family for you!”

“You lost your money, David,” Melissa corrected him icily, throwing her coat over her arm. “I didn't sign up to play nursemaid to a broke, middle-aged man living out of a suitcase. We're done.”
She walked out the front door, leaving David standing alone in an apartment he could no longer afford, abandoned by the woman who had promised him a brand-new life. He had traded a loyal, twenty-eight-year marriage for a superficial fantasy, and the moment the funds dried up, the fantasy evaporated into thin air.
