Chapter 17 - The Phantom SyndicateI threw my coat on and marched out into the freezing winter air, Julian right by my side. We walked down our pristine driveway to the edge of our sprawling estate.

My breath caught in my throat. The massive, two-hundred-acre plot of pristine forest surrounding our property—land that was supposed to be protected by federal zoning laws—was swarming with heavy construction equipment. Massive excavators were tearing up the earth just inches from my property line.

“I pulled the public records ten minutes ago,” Julian said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “The land was quietly rezoned and purchased by an anonymous offshore shell company called Apex Holdings.”

“They aren't building residential homes,” I realized, staring at the commercial drilling rigs. “They are building a massive, industrial waste processing facility. Right next to our estate.”

The strategy was brutally genius. Apex Holdings was using the fake AI scandal to tank my company's stock, while simultaneously building an industrial nightmare next to my home to destroy my sanctuary. It was a synchronized, multi-million dollar psychological and financial war.

“Who owns Apex Holdings?” I demanded, turning to Julian.

“I traced the cryptocurrency routing numbers used to buy the VIA clone accounts,” Julian said grimly. “It leads back to a blind trust. But the methodology... the use of AI deepfakes, the black-market Facebook clones, the sheer narcissism of the attack...”

“David,” I breathed, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

“He’s in a minimum-security federal facility, Elena,” Julian frowned. “He doesn't have access to this kind of capital.”

“He doesn't need capital if he has a new partner,” I said, my mind racing. “David was indicted for corporate espionage. He spent months negotiating plea deals with shadow syndicates. He found a dark-web billionaire who hates me just as much as he does, and he’s operating this campaign from a contraband cell phone.”

David was trying to prove that even from behind bars, he could still reach out and ruin my life. He expected me to panic. He expected me to cower in my indestructible kitchen and beg for a settlement.

I looked at the heavy machinery tearing up the earth outside my home, and a fierce, calculated fire ignited in my chest.

“Julian,” I said, my voice completely devoid of fear. “David thinks he can use digital smoke and mirrors to break me. Let’s show him what a real cyber-war looks like.”
