Chapter 3 - The Monday Morning Massacre

David thought the nightmare ended when the reception concluded. He had absolutely no idea that the wedding was just the prologue.
For the six months since I had found those text messages on his phone, I had not just been sleeping in the guest room and planning floral arrangements. I had been quietly, ruthlessly restructuring our entire financial portfolio.
David was a real estate developer, but the initial capital that had launched his firm twenty years ago had come entirely from my inheritance. Our home, his luxury cars, and the massive investment accounts were legally tied to a blind trust that I controlled. Because I had always let him manage the day-to-day finances, he arrogantly assumed I didn't know how to wield the power I legally held.
On Monday morning, exactly forty-eight hours after the wedding, David walked into his downtown office expecting to hide behind his desk. Instead, he found my attorney, a ruthless corporate litigator named Julian, sitting in his leather chair.
“What the hell is going on here?” David demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of exhaustion and rising panic.
Julian didn't smile. He simply slid a thick, bound legal dossier across the desk. “Good morning, David. As of 8:00 AM today, your wife has officially filed for divorce, citing egregious infidelity and the dissipation of marital assets. Furthermore, she has invoked her right as the primary trustee to dissolve the joint holding company.”
David’s face went chalk-white. “She can't do that. Half of this company is mine!”

“Actually, it isn't,” Julian corrected him smoothly, pulling out a forensic audit. “Over the last twelve months, you have embezzled approximately two hundred thousand dollars of marital funds to pay for Melissa’s luxury apartment, her designer clothing, and your extravagant weekend getaways. In this state, using joint funds to finance a mistress is considered marital fraud. The judge signed an emergency injunction this morning. All of your corporate and personal accounts are frozen. Your credit cards are deactivated. You are completely locked out.”
David staggered backward, grasping the edge of a bookshelf to keep from collapsing. He had planned to leave me on his own terms, keeping his wealth, his reputation, and his young mistress. In a single morning, I had legally, systematically stripped him of everything but the suit on his back.
