Chapter 8 - The Second Meeting

At 3:15 AM, a dense, freezing sea fog rolled over the black waters of Long Island Sound, cloaking Black Rock Harbor in an eerie, impenetrable grey mist.
Marcus’s tactical team, comprised of six former special operations operatives dressed in sterile tactical gear, moved through the shadows of the marina like phantoms. High-resolution thermal optics scanned the slips, painting the cold steel and fiberglass hulls in vibrant shades of orange and yellow.
At the end of Dock C, The Sea Ghost rocked gently against the wooden pilings. Two armed lookouts paced the aft deck, their submachine guns concealed beneath heavy maritime parkas.
"Thermal scan confirms three hostiles on board," Marcus whispered over the tactical comms. "Julian Cole is in the main salon with a high-end satellite terminal. Lookouts at the bow and stern. Wendy’s Lexus just pulled into the marina parking lot."
Through my binoculars from the elevated vantage point of an abandoned bait shop, I watched Wendy step out of her car. She was carrying a leather weekend bag alongside her purse. She truly believed she was embarking on a glamorous life of international exile with millions in stolen funds.
She hurried down the slick wooden dock, her heels clicking against the damp planks.
The lookout on the aft deck recognized her and signaled to the bridge. The boarding gangway was lowered, and Wendy stepped onto the deck of The Sea Ghost.
"Let her deliver the drive," I said into the comms. "The moment Julian inserts that key into his terminal, the FBI cyber division gets the automated warrant authorization, and we move."
Inside the yacht’s illuminated salon, Julian greeted Wendy with a cold, predatory smile. He took the titanium hardware key from her outstretched hand like a man receiving the crown jewels of Europe.
"Is this the master key?" Julian asked, his voice picked up clearly by the laser microphone Marcus had targeted against the salon’s reinforced glass window.
"Yes! Straight from Harrison’s private safe," Wendy boasted, panting slightly from the cold. "He has no idea. Jessi is so heavily sedated she won't be able to speak to the police for days. Where is my passport? Where is my share of the transfer?"
Julian didn't answer. He turned to his high-powered ruggedized laptop, plugged the hardware key into the high-speed USB-C port, and pressed enter.
A bright blue progress bar illuminated his face.
Then, the screen flashed crimson red.

A massive, bold prompt locked the entire operating system: TACTICAL ASSET RECOVERY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED - GEO-LOCATION TRANSMITTED TO US DEPT OF JUSTICE.
Julian’s face twisted into an expression of murderous rage.
