Chapter 11 - Unmasking the Syndicate

The drive back to Greenwich was a blur of flashing emergency lights, roaring twin-turbo engines, and breathless tactical updates over the radio.

Julian had kept a two-man mercenary cell on standby near our neighborhood as a contingency plan. The moment his yacht was raided, an automated distress signal triggered their assault protocol. Their objective was simple and monstrous: seize Fiona, neutralize anyone in the house, and use my daughter to broker Julian's safe passage out of the country.

As our SUV tore up the winding roads of Greenwich at ninety miles per hour, my phone chimed with a high-priority alert.

It was the butterfly pendant.

Fiona had pressed the wings together.

"Fiona activated the beacon!" I shouted to Marcus. "She’s in the safe room!"

"Estate security is engaging the intruders in the front courtyard!" Marcus reported, listening to the chaotic chatter on his headset. "One hostile down! The second hostile has breached the ground floor terrace glass!"

Five minutes later, our SUV smashed through the estate gates, sliding sideways onto the crushed-stone driveway behind two black tactical sedans. Gunfire echoed through the crisp morning air.

I didn't wait for the tactical team. I grabbed a tactical flashlight and charged through the shattered glass doors of the terrace.

Inside the grand living room, one of Julian’s operatives lay disarmed and restrained on the floor, guarded by Maria, who stood over him with a smoking 12-gauge shotgun from the estate’s hunting cabinet.

"Maria! Where are they?!" I yelled.

"Upstairs! The second man ran toward the master suite!" she shouted back, her hands steady despite the chaos.

I took the grand staircase three steps at a time.

At the end of the second-floor hallway, the heavy reinforced door to the master panic room was slightly ajar. Standing in the doorway was Julian Cole himself. He had somehow circled back from the coast, desperate, soaking wet, and bleeding from a laceration on his temple, holding a heavy automatic pistol.

Inside the room, Jessi stood protectively in front of Fiona, holding a heavy brass fire poker with both hands, her eyes burning with a mother’s ferocious, protective fury.

"Step away from my daughter, Julian," Jessi snarled, her voice ringing with absolute, fearless authority. "You touch her, and I will kill you myself."
