Chapter 7 - A Trap in the Dark

By 11:30 PM, the grand Vance estate had fallen completely dark.
Inside my private study, I sat in the shadows beside the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, watching the infrared camera feed streaming to my tablet. Outside in the hallway, the faint creak of floorboards signaled the approach of our predator.
The study door clicked open silently.
Wendy slipped into the room like a wraith, clad in dark sweatpants and carrying a high-intensity penlight. She moved with practiced stealth directly toward the oil painting concealing the wall safe behind my desk.
She didn't know that three hours earlier, Marcus’s digital technicians had swapped out the authentic Vance Dynamics hardware key with a masterfully crafted duplicate. The decoy key looked, weighed, and felt identical to the original titanium model, but inside its casing sat an active GPS/GLONASS beacon paired with a self-executing trojan program designed to hijack and broadcast the IP addresses of any server it was plugged into.
Wendy reached the painting, swung it open, and punched in the four-digit bypass code she had undoubtedly spied over my shoulder months ago. The safe door clicked open with a soft metallic chime.
She reached inside, her fingers wrapping greedily around the decoy hardware token.
I watched her through the night-vision feed as a sickening grin of triumph spread across her face. She closed the safe door, swung the painting back into position, and slipped the drive into her pocket. She glided out of the room without making a sound, convinced she had just stolen the keys to a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire.
Two minutes later, Marcus’s voice crackled through my encrypted earpiece. "Package is in transit. Wendy just sent an encrypted SMS to an offshore burner number: 'I have the key. Meeting you at the marina slip 4 at 0400.'"
"Do we have the location?" I asked, stepping out of the study and heading toward the command garage.
"Black Rock Harbor, Slip 4," Marcus confirmed. "A sixty-foot luxury yacht registered to a Panamanian front company called The Sea Ghost. Julian Cole is on board. He has an international flight manifest filed for a private jet leaving Westchester County Airport for Dubai at 6:00 AM."
"He’s planning to download our defense architecture to foreign buyers the moment he hits international waters," I said.

"Exactly," Marcus said. "And if Wendy boards that yacht with him, she won't be sipping champagne in Dubai, Harrison. Cole is going to execute her the second he verifies the data and dump her body in the middle of Long Island Sound."
"We move in at 03:30," I ordered. "Inform the FBI Tactical Interception Unit in New Haven. It's time to bring down the curtain."
