Chapter 6 - The Wife's Confession

I walked into the master suite to find Jessi sitting on the edge of our king-sized bed, staring blankly at a steaming porcelain mug of chamomile tea sitting on the nightstand. Her hands were trembling violently in her lap.

I stepped across the hardwood floor, picked up the mug, and without a word, walked into the adjoining bathroom and dumped the toxic concoction down the drain.

"Harry?" Jessi asked, startled, her voice raspy and confused. "What are you doing? Mom made that for my anxiety..."

I returned to the bedroom, shut and locked the double doors, and knelt directly in front of her. I took both of her ice-cold hands in mine, looking deep into her dilated pupils.

"Jessi," I said, my voice steady, firm, and filled with unyielding love. "Look at me. Focus on my voice."

She blinked heavily, trying to clear the cognitive fog that had clouded her brilliant mind for months. "Harry, I feel so lost. I think... I think I'm losing my mind. Mom says I'm having a nervous breakdown just like my father did..."

"Your father never had a nervous breakdown, Jessi," I said gently. "And neither are you. Wendy has been poisoning you."

Jessi froze. Her eyes widened in utter disbelief. "What? No... Harry, that's insane. Mom loves me. She’s been taking care of me—"

"Wendy has been dosing your tea with synthetic neuroleptics for over sixteen weeks," I continued, pulling out my phone and showing her the high-resolution lab analysis Marcus had generated. "She took two million dollars from Julian Cole to destroy this family from the inside out."

The moment the name Julian Cole left my lips, the color completely drained from Jessi’s face. She gasped for air as if she had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer.

"J-Julian?" she stammered, her voice dropping to a horrified whisper. "Julian is dead, Harry. He died eight years ago in New Hampshire! I saw the police report!"

"He is alive, Jessi. He faked the crash with Wendy's help. I saw him with my own eyes this morning in a warehouse off Harbor Wharf in Bridgeport. Wendy met him there. She tried to force Fiona to steal the master security token from my office last night to deliver to him."

Jessi covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a muffled, agonized scream of pure betrayal. Tears flooded down her face as the horrific reality crashed over her like a tidal wave.

"Oh God... oh God, Harry," she wept, collapsing against my shoulders. "Eight years ago, before the crash... Julian told me that if I ever tried to leave him or expose his offshore shell companies, he would make sure my family suffered a fate worse than death. When he 'died,' Mom told me that Julian had left behind secret debts in my name—that if I didn't let her manage my trust funds, the federal authorities would send me to prison for life! She’s been blackmailing me with Julian’s ghost for eight years!"

I wrapped my arms around my wife, holding her tight as she shook with cathartic grief and rage. The final piece of the puzzle had fallen into place. Wendy had used Julian's fabricated death as an eternal weapon of terror against her own daughter, keeping Jessi in a perpetual state of fear and submission while siphoning her wealth.

"It’s over, Jessi," I whispered into her ear, my voice cold as tempered steel. "The nightmare ends tonight."
