Chapter 3 - Blood Money and Shadow Trails

Marcus Kane arrived at our Greenwich property in an unmarked surveillance van disguised as a high-end landscaping vehicle. Within twenty minutes, his two technicians had transformed the upper level of my secondary garage into a tactical operations center. Screens flickered with real-time wiretaps, cellular frequency scans, and high-frequency audio directional feeds aimed directly at Wendy’s guest cottage.
"Here is what we have so far," Marcus said, laying out several digital dossiers on the folding command table. "Julian Cole didn't die in that ravine. The dental records were falsified by a coroner in Boston who received a wire transfer of two million dollars through an account in Belize three days after the crash. Cole spent the last six years living in Lisbon and Zurich under the alias 'Victor Vance'—ironic choice of last name—brokering stolen intellectual property to Eastern European and Asian conglomerates."
"And Wendy?" I asked, staring at the surveillance monitors showing my mother-in-law pouring herself a glass of Chardonnay in her kitchen.
"Wendy was in debt up to her eyeballs long before her second husband died," Marcus explained, pulling up a financial forensic tree. "Her late husband discovered she had drained his retirement portfolio to fund illegal offshore speculative investments run by Julian’s network. When he threatened to divorce her and go to the authorities, he conveniently suffered a fatal 'heart attack' in his sleep. No autopsy was performed because Wendy insisted on immediate cremation."
A sick feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. "She murdered him."
"We can't prove it yet without an exhumation order, but the statistical probability is near one hundred percent," Marcus said grimly. "When his estate yielded zero liquidity because she had already burned through it, she turned her sights on you and Jessi. But here is the most dangerous part, Harrison: Wendy has been feeding Jessi low-dose synthetic neuroleptics for the past four months."
I grabbed the edge of the steel table, the room spinning around me. "What did you say?"
Marcus pointed to a digital chemical breakdown on the screen. "We ran an intercept on the herbal sleep supplements Wendy has been hand-delivering to your wife every evening under the guise of 'calming teas.' It’s laced with a compound that mimics severe clinical depression, memory lapses, and erratic emotional instability. Wendy’s end game wasn't just to steal your company's data. She was setting the stage to have Jessi declared mentally incompetent, frame you for corporate espionage using the stolen defense token, and claim legal guardianship of Fiona along with power of attorney over the Vance family trusts."
The sheer magnitude of the evil brewing under my own roof was staggering. Every gentle word Wendy had spoken to Fiona, every concerned remark she made about Jessi’s 'fragile mental health,' every cup of tea she brewed—it was all calculated warfare designed to destroy my wife, steal my daughter, and rob us of everything we had built.
"Where is Jessi right now?" I demanded, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.
"She’s at her art foundation gallery in Manhattan," Marcus replied. "She thinks you’re in the air over Ohio right now. Wendy believes the same thing. They don't know you aborted the flight."
"Good," I said, cold resolve settling into my bones. "We keep it that way. We don't strike until we have both Wendy and Julian trapped in an airtight box from which no lawyer on Earth can save them."

"What’s your play?" Marcus asked, his eyes gleaming with professional admiration.
"We give them exactly what they want," I said. "A dummy hardware key with an embedded military-grade tracking worm. And we make Wendy believe she is about to win."
