Chapter 8 - The Mother-in-Law’s Dark Ledger

Before the final confrontation at the bank, Claire needed one final piece of the puzzle: the physical evidence connecting Linda Bennett to the prior murders and insurance scams orchestrated by Daniel’s syndicate.

At three in the morning, while Daniel and Victoria were locked inside the Lincoln Park apartment under the delusion of security, Claire and Marcus arrived at Linda’s empty suburban estate.

Using a bypass key Claire had kept for years, they slipped through the kitchen entrance. The house was dead silent, the faint smell of poisoned chamomile still lingering in the guest bedroom.

"Where would she keep the physical records?" Marcus whispered, sweeping his tactical flashlight across the mahogany study.

"Linda is superstitious," Claire replied, walking directly toward the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the parlor. "She doesn't trust digital clouds. She believes physical paper is the only thing that cannot be hacked remotely."

Claire reached behind the heavy brass pendulum of the clock, feeling along the carved oak casing until her fingers found a recessed latch. With a soft click, a concealed compartment popped open in the base of the clock.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound ledger along with three certified death certificates, multiple bearer bonds, and a stack of audio cassette tapes dating back eight years.

Marcus opened the ledger under his flashlight beam. His breath caught in his throat.

"My God..." Marcus breathed. "It’s all here. The names of four other women. The exact dates of their 'accidental' deaths, the insurance policy numbers, and the kickback percentages paid directly to Dr. Sterling and two municipal coroners."

"Look at the first entry," Claire whispered, pointing to a name written in Linda’s precise, looping cursive.

Eleanor Bennett — Mother of Daniel Bennett. Cause of death: Accidental overdose of prescription sedatives. Payout: $1.2 Million.

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "Linda isn't even Daniel’s biological mother. She was Daniel’s father's second wife. She murdered Daniel’s real mother twenty years ago to claim the initial family estate... and then trained Daniel to become her partner in crime."

"This isn't just an identity theft ring," Marcus said, placing the ledger and tapes into a sealed evidence bag. "This is a generational murder syndicate. With this ledger, every single one of them—Daniel, Linda, Victoria, Sterling, and their corrupt network—is facing life without the possibility of parole."

Suddenly, the red laser dot of a tactical rifle swept across the wall of the study.

"Down!" Marcus bellowed, tackling Claire to the hardwood floor just as a silenced gunshot shattered the bay window, sending shards of glass raining down across the room.
