Chapter 6 - The Stolen Life on Display

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered under massive crystal chandeliers. Chicago’s corporate elite, real estate moguls, and high-society patrons mingled over flutes of champagne, the room filled with the soft strains of a string quartet.
Standing near the center of the room, Daniel Bennett wore an impeccably tailored tuxedo, radiating confidence. On his arm was Victoria Vance—styled perfectly in Claire’s emerald-green silk evening gown, her hair swept up in Claire’s signature chignon, wearing the heirloom diamond necklace that had belonged to Claire’s grandmother.
"You're doing fantastic," Daniel murmured into Victoria's ear, his glass raised in a toast. "The city council members just congratulated us on the downtown redevelopment project. Nobody suspects a thing."
Victoria laughed softly, gracefully accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. "I told you, Daniel. People only see what they expect to see. To them, I am Claire Bennett—the devoted, wealthy heiress."
Across the mezzanine balcony, concealed in the deep shadows behind the velvet curtains, the real Claire Bennett watched them through a pair of compact binoculars. Marcus stood beside her, connected via earpiece to Sarah, who was monitoring the hotel’s internal audio-visual feeds.
"Audio transmitter is live on Victoria's clutch," Sarah reported through the comms. "We've intercepted their frequency."
"Daniel is feeling invincible," Marcus observed quietly. "He thinks Friday is his victory lap."
"Let's shatter his peace of mind," Claire said.
Claire pulled out her burner phone and entered a direct line to the banquet master-of-ceremonies podium. Using a real-time vocal modulation app programmed with her own authentic voice, she spoke to the event director.
Moments later, the string quartet ceased playing. The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, tapping it gently.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please," the MC announced with a warm smile. "We have a very special, unannounced dedication tonight. Mr. Daniel Bennett and his lovely wife Claire have always been generous patrons of the Lakeside Pediatric Wing. In honor of Mrs. Bennett’s miraculous recovery from her recent surgery, a special message has been delivered to the grand projection screen."
Daniel froze. He exchanged a frantic, confused glance with Victoria. "Did you arrange this?" Daniel hissed under his breath.
"No!" Victoria whispered, her eyes darting around the crowded room. "I didn't touch the charity program!"
The massive LED screens flanking the stage flickered to life.
Instead of a charity tribute, the screen illuminated a high-resolution photograph of Claire's grandfather’s original handwritten trust ledger. Below it, in bold, blood-red text, appeared a single sentence:
"THE INHERITANCE BELONGS ONLY TO THE LIVING BLOODLINE. THE IMPOSTER WEARS A DEAD WOMAN’S GOWN."
A collective murmur of confusion rippled across the four hundred guests in the ballroom.
Victoria gasped, dropping her champagne flute onto the marble floor. The crystal shattered with a loud crack, red wine splashing across the hem of her emerald gown like fresh blood.
Daniel’s face drained of all color. He violently signaled the audio-visual booth to cut the feed. "Turn that off! Turn it off right now!" he snarled, his composure completely disintegrating.
High above on the mezzanine, Claire looked down at the trembling imposter.
Victoria looked up toward the shadowed balcony. For a single, fleeting second, their eyes met across the vast expanse of the ballroom. Claire raised her glass in a silent, mocking toast before stepping back into the darkness.

Victoria grabbed Daniel’s arm, her fingers digging through his tuxedo sleeve in absolute terror.
"Daniel..." Victoria whimpered, her voice shaking violently. "She’s here. She’s in the building!"
