Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Lakeside General

Rain poured in relentless sheets, drenching Claire’s thin hospital cardigan as she stumbled through the thickets behind Linda’s property. Her surgical stitches pulled with every ragged breath, but adrenaline numbed the fire in her gut. She reached a commercial strip two miles away, shivering under the neon hum of an all-night diner.

She couldn't call the police from a public payphone—not yet. If Daniel’s accomplice at Lakeside Medical Center was Dr. Sterling, the chief attending physician who had signed off on her surgical charts, then medical records had already been forged. If Daniel and Linda claimed she was suffering from post-operative psychosis or delirium, her word against her wealthy husband and a respected surgeon would buy Daniel the time he needed to finish the job under the guise of an emergency psychiatric hold.

She needed incontrovertible proof. And she knew exactly where it was kept.

Claire walked into the diner's restroom, washed the mud from her face and arms, and secured her hair under a discarded baseball cap left on the towel rack. She used the payphone in the vestibule to dial a number she knew by heart: lakeside General’s night dispensary.

"Pharmacy depot, this is Evelyn," a weary voice answered.

"Evelyn," Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "It’s Claire."

A heavy gasp came through the receiver. "Claire? Oh my god, what is going on? Dr. Sterling just flagged your file as an unauthorized AWOL patient! He told the floor nurses you had an acute psychotic break and took off into the city. Your husband is on the news right now with a missing person appeal, crying his eyes out!"

"Listen to me very carefully, Evelyn," Claire said, her voice dropping into an iron register. "Daniel and Sterling are trying to kill me. Look at my digital medication administration log from yesterday afternoon. Look at the secondary IV push coded under batch 409-B."

There was the sound of rapid keyboard clicks over the line. After ten seconds, Evelyn let out a choked breath. "Potassium chloride mixed with succinylcholine... at lethal micro-doses disguised as saline flush. Claire... this would cause progressive respiratory failure within seventy-two hours while mimicking natural surgical complications. Sterling signed the manual override himself!"

"He’s being paid off," Claire said. "Daniel has an imposter living in my apartment right now, wearing my clothes, preparing to sign my inheritance documents and insurance transfers before my supposed body is identified. Evelyn, I need you to download the raw metadata logs from the dispensary server before Sterling wipes them during morning rounds. Put them on an encrypted flash drive."

"Where do I meet you?" Evelyn asked without hesitation. "I'll do it right now."

"The old freight dock behind the boiler room in thirty minutes. Don't use the elevator cameras."

Claire hung up the phone. She had no money, no phone, and no identification, but she possessed twelve years of institutional knowledge about Lakeside General. She knew every blind spot in the hospital’s security perimeter.

Thirty minutes later, Claire slipped past the rusted security gate of Lakeside’s service alley. The steam vents from the industrial laundry hissed into the freezing air. A shadowy figure emerged from the steel double doors: Evelyn, clutching a small yellow thumb drive and an envelope filled with cash.

"Take this," Evelyn urged, thrusting the items into Claire's hands along with a spare winter coat. "There’s four hundred dollars here. The logs show Daniel deposited fifty thousand dollars into an offshore escrow account linked to Sterling’s private LLC two weeks before your surgery was even scheduled."

"Thank you, Evelyn," Claire whispered, tears stinging her eyes.

"That's not all," Evelyn added, her expression grim. "I checked the hospital visitor logs. The woman Daniel brought in to 'consult' on your insurance policy two days ago wasn't just a random stranger. She signed the visitor badge under the name Victoria Vance."

The name hit Claire like a physical blow. Victoria Vance was Daniel’s former college girlfriend—a woman he claimed had vanished from his life a decade ago after an embezzlement scandal at an upscale art gallery.

"They planned this from the very day we got engaged," Claire realized, her knuckles turning white. "Daniel didn't marry me because he loved me. He married me because my grandfather's commercial real estate trust matured on my thirty-second birthday."

"What are you going to do?" Evelyn asked softly.

May you like

Claire slipped the encrypted drive into the inner pocket of her coat. Her eyes, once soft and trusting, gleamed with an unforgiving resolve.

"I'm going to let them think their plan is working," Claire replied. "Until the moment I strip away everything they've ever stolen."
