Chapter 14 - The Dead Woman Walks In

Daniel backed against the panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the forty-second floor, trapped like a wild animal. His polished, charming veneer was entirely stripped away, revealing the cowardly, desperate monster beneath.

"Claire..." Daniel stammered, dropping to his knees on the carpet, tears of pathetic desperation spilling down his cheeks. "Claire, listen to me! It was Victoria! She seduced me, she manipulated me! She threatened to expose my business debts if I didn't help her steal the trust! I love you, Claire! Everything I did was to protect our family!"

Claire stood over him, looking down without a single shred of anger, hatred, or sorrow. There was only absolute, pristine indifference.

"You didn't just try to kill me, Daniel," Claire said softly, her words cutting deeper than any blade. "You tried to erase my existence. You brought another woman into our home, dressed her in my clothes, and rehearsed my murder over wine and candles. You thought I was weak because I loved you. You thought I was fragile because I was kind."

She bent down, looking straight into his terrified eyes.

"Kindness is not weakness, Daniel. And survival is not an accident."

Agent Vance and Marcus stepped forward, pulling Daniel to his feet and wrenching his arms behind his back. The cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a sharp, final snap.

The corporate attorneys and Apex executives looked on in utter disgust as Daniel Bennett—once the rising star of Chicago’s financial elite—was dragged out of the boardroom in shame, his pathetic pleas for mercy echoing down the long, carpeted hallways.

Claire turned toward the vast window, looking out over the magnificent skyline of Chicago. The morning sun was breaking through the gray clouds, bathing the city in brilliant, golden light.
