Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Fortune

Marcus Reid operated out of an unpretentious office situated above an auto repair shop in the Industrial District. The room was lined with steel filing cabinets, dusty law books, and an expansive corkboard covered in photographs of corporate executives—with Daniel Bennett’s face pinned dead center.

When Claire walked through the door, Marcus stood up abruptly, his hand instinctively reaching toward the desk drawer before he recognized the fiery intensity in her eyes.

"You look like a ghost," Marcus said, his voice gravelly. "The local news has your face plastered on every screen. They claim you suffered an acute nervous breakdown following gallbladder surgery and fled into the night."

"The only breakdown happening," Claire said, placing the encrypted flash drive on his desk, "is the one coming for Daniel. This contains raw metadata from Lakeside General’s central dispensary. It proves Dr. Sterling deliberately dosed my IV with lethal concentrations of paralytics, paid for via Daniel’s offshore accounts."

Marcus leaned forward, plugging the drive into a hardened workstation. His weathered eyes scanned the rows of hex codes and digital signatures. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.

"This is the smoking gun I’ve been hunting for five years," Marcus whispered. "Daniel Bennett isn't just a corporate embezzler. He runs an orchestrated identity theft ring that targets wealthy women and vulnerable heirs. Five years ago, I had him cornered on a similar fraud involving an heiress from Evanston. Before I could present the indictment, the girl 'drowned' in an accidental boating mishap, and my evidence vanished from the precinct locker."

"He used Victoria Vance back then too, didn't he?" Claire asked.

"Victoria is an elite grifter," Marcus nodded, pulling up a confidential dossier. "She studies the targets for months. She learns their speech patterns, vocal cadence, handwriting quirks, and social habits. Once the target is eliminated, Victoria steps into their shoes long enough to liquidate foreign assets, cash in life insurance policies, and vanish overseas under fresh identities."

"She’s currently sitting in my living room," Claire said coldly. "Wearing my mother’s jewelry and practicing my signature to sell my grandfather’s fourteen-million-dollar downtown estate to Apex Group this coming Friday."

"If we go to the local police right now," Marcus warned, "Daniel’s bought judges will seal the file, and Dr. Sterling will file for immediate emergency guardianship before we can secure a federal indictment. We need to catch them red-handed in the act of fraud, wire transfer, and attempted murder simultaneously."

"We will," Claire said. "Because Victoria has made one catastrophic mistake."

Marcus arched an eyebrow. "What mistake?"

"My grandfather Arthur was a paranoid genius," Claire explained, pulling a silver key from her neck chain. "The downtown commercial property isn't held under standard municipal deeds. It is tied to a irrevocable trust held in the subterranean vaults of First National Depository. To execute any sale, the trustee must present the original parchment charter stored in Vault 402, accessible only by a two-factor security protocol: a unique cipher code known only to me, and a biometric vein scan of my right hand."

Marcus let out a low whistle. "Which means Victoria cannot finalize the sale at the title office on Friday. She will have to enter First National Depository personally to retrieve that charter."

"Exactly," Claire’s voice was as sharp as a scalpel. "And when she walks into that subterranean vault, she won't find an empty safe. She will find me waiting for her."
