Chapter 3 - The Woman in My Mirror

The cheap motel room on the outskirts of the city smelled of industrial bleach and old carpets, but to Claire, it was a war room.

Using the cash Evelyn had provided, she bought a burner smartphone, a pair of dark sunglasses, and a prepaid mobile hotspot. She spread newspaper clippings, bank printouts, and notes across the rickety laminate desk.

Through the burner phone, Claire accessed public corporate registries and county property records. What she uncovered made her blood run cold.

Her grandfather, Arthur Bennett, had left her a prime commercial block in downtown Chicago—a property currently valued at over fourteen million dollars. Under the terms of the trust, the property was non-transferable to any spouse during her lifetime, but in the event of her death without living children, full executive control and ownership defaulted to her surviving husband, Daniel Bennett.

Furthermore, three months prior, an application for a five-million-dollar supplemental life insurance policy had been filed in her name, complete with a forged signature.

Claire dialed into her own home security network using a backdoor admin password she had set up when the cameras were first installed—a password Daniel had never bothered to learn. The live feed connected instantly.

The screen illuminated her living room.

There sat Victoria Vance, lounging comfortably on Claire’s velvet armchair. She was wearing Claire’s favorite cashmere sweater and sipping vintage Merlot from the crystal glasses Claire had inherited from her mother.

Daniel walked into the frame, holding a manila folder. He leaned down, kissing Victoria deeply on the lips.

"The real estate closing is set for Friday at ten in the morning," Daniel said, his voice crystal clear through the microphone feed. "The buyers from the Apex Group believe you are Claire Bennett. Sterling has already prepared the certified medical clearance stating you are recovered and fully competent to sign the sale deed."

Victoria smiled, a predatory, self-satisfied smirk. "And the real Claire?"

"Linda searched the woods all night. The little idiot ran into the ravines without shoes or money. Even if she didn't freeze to death, Sterling filed the warrant for emergency psychiatric custody. The moment she surfaces anywhere near a hospital or police station, Sterling's contacts will intercept her. She’ll be sedated and transferred to a private sanitarium under a Jane Doe hold until the paperwork clears. Then... an unfortunate lethal overdose in her sleep."

"You're brilliant, darling," Victoria purred, practicing Claire's signature on a legal notepad. "Look at this. Can you tell the difference?"

Daniel inspected the paper and laughed. "Not even her own grandfather could tell. By Friday noon, we walk away with nineteen million dollars in liquid cash, and Linda gets her cut to clear her gambling debts in Macau."

Watching them through the screen, Claire felt no panic—only a cold, surgical clarity.

They thought Victoria was her mirror image. They thought all it took to steal a person’s life was a dye job, a copied signature, and a stolen dress.

They were wrong.

Victoria didn't know the secrets locked inside Claire’s vault at the First National Depository. She didn't know that Arthur Bennett had instituted a biometric, bloodline-contingent safeguard on the trust deed that no forged signature could ever bypass without triggering an immediate fraud lockdown.

Claire closed the laptop. She picked up the burner phone and dialed the number of Marcus Reid—a disgraced former state prosecutor turned private investigator whose career had been destroyed five years ago when Daniel’s corrupt financial syndicate framed him for evidence tampering.

The phone rang three times before a gruff voice answered.

"Reid."

"Mr. Reid," Claire said calmly. "My name is Claire Bennett. You don't know me, but you know my husband, Daniel. And I am about to hand you the evidence to destroy him, his mother, and his entire empire."
