Chapter 10 - THE FINAL CONFESSION

The trial reached its climax on the fifth day.
The prosecutor placed a final piece of evidence onto the digital projector.
An audio recording played through the courtroom speakers.
It was Alessandro’s voice.
“If Marco interferes with the offshore accounts, take care of him quietly.”
The entire courtroom went dead silent.
It was the definitive proof of conspiracy and attempted murder against his own blood.
Alessandro sat slumped in his chair, staring blankly at the defense table.
His lawyers had already abandoned all hope of an acquittal.
The judge looked down at the disgraced mafia boss with stern disappointment.
“Mr. Moretti, do you have anything to say before sentencing?”
Alessandro slowly stood up.
He didn’t look at the judge.
He turned his head and looked straight at Sarah in the front row.
His eyes were hollow, filled with bitter regret.
“I thought power was everything,” Alessandro whispered into the microphone.
“And what did you learn?” the judge asked.
“I learned that a kingdom built on betrayal,” Alessandro choked out, “turns to dust the moment your queen walks away.”
Sarah stared back at him without a single trace of emotion.
The judge slammed his gavel down one final time.
“I sentence the defendant to thirty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.”
The gavel echoed like a gunshot through the room.

Alessandro was handcuffed and led away into the shadows.
