Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID

The federal agents moved like silent shadows through the front gates of the East Wing estate.
Flashlights cut through the heavy midnight fog.
Alessandro sat alone in his home office, staring at a bottle of scotch.
The heavy oak door burst open without warning.
Three armed federal agents flooded the room.
“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!” shouted the lead officer.
Alessandro didn’t move.
He slowly set his glass down on the desk.
“This is a mistake,” Alessandro muttered, his voice hoarse.
“Mr. Moretti, you are under arrest for racketeering, tax evasion, and financial fraud,” the officer declared.
Heavy steel cuffs snapped around Alessandro’s wrists.
As they dragged him out through the grand hallway, the lights flickered on.
Sarah stood at the top of the grand staircase.
She wore a crisp black pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a flawless ponytail.
She looked down at her handcuffed husband with icy detachment.
“Sarah!” Alessandro roared, straining against the agents. “You set me up!”
“No, Alessandro,” Sarah said, her voice carrying clearly across the foyer. “You built a house of cards. I just knocked down the first brick.”
“I gave you everything!” he screamed.
“You gave me a cage,” Sarah replied quietly. “Now enjoy your cell.”
The agents hauled him out into the cold night air.
The heavy front doors slammed shut behind them.
Sarah turned around and walked slowly into the master study.
She picked up the platinum chain and the diamond key resting on the desk.
She dropped it into the wastebasket.

Then she poured herself a glass of wine.
