Chapter 12 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST
Late one evening, Sarah sat in the master study reviewing financial audits.
A soft knock echoed at the heavy mahogany door.
“Come in,” Sarah said without looking up.
The door creaked open slowly.
An elderly family maid, Maria, stepped into the room.
Her hands trembled as she held a small, dust-covered wooden box.
“What is this, Maria?” Sarah asked gently, setting her pen down.
“Your husband… your late husband’s father left this for you before he passed,” Maria whispered.
Sarah’s brow furrowed.
“My father-in-law?”
“Yes,” Maria said, placing the box on the desk. “He knew what Alessandro was becoming. He trusted only you.”
Sarah popped the brass latch on the wooden box.
Inside lay an old leather journal and a heavy golden key.
She opened the journal to the first yellowed page.
Her eyes scanned her late father-in-law’s handwritten notes.
Every illegal transaction Alessandro had ever hidden.
Every offshore account.
And a final note addressed directly to her:
To Sarah. If you are reading this, my son failed you. Use this truth to reclaim your life.
Sarah closed the journal slowly.
The final puzzle pieces of the empire clicked into place.
There were still hidden assets buried deep in Swiss accounts.
Assets Alessandro thought he had taken to his grave.
