Chapter 7 - When the Syndicate Enforcers Knock on the Wrong Door

By Tuesday morning, the walls were closing in on Harrison from every direction.
With his accounts frozen and his corporate authority stripped, the Eastern European shipping syndicate that had used Blake Enterprises' container lines realized their dirty money pipeline had suddenly been severed.
At 10:00 a.m., two blacked-out SUVs pulled up to the gated entrance of the Blake Estate. Four burly men in tailored dark suits, led by a ruthless syndicate enforcer named Viktor Voronin, stepped out and bypassed the electronic security gate.
Harrison met them at the grand double oak doors, trembling and disheveled.
“Viktor... listen to me,” Harrison stammered, holding his hands up defensively. “It’s just a temporary legal hiccup with my wife. My lawyers are filing an emergency appeal in appellate court this afternoon. The shipping routes will reopen by tomorrow morning, I swear to you!”
Viktor stepped into the grand foyer, towering over Harrison with dead, emotionless eyes. He shoved Harrison back against the marble wall, grabbing him by the collar of his designer shirt.
“You guaranteed us safe harbor for forty metric tons of untaxed cargo arriving at the docks tonight, Harrison,” Viktor hissed, his accent thick and lethal. “We paid you $10 million in shadow retainers. Now our ships are being held in international waters because the port authority received an anonymous federal tip signed with your father’s private cryptographic keys.”
“It wasn't me! It was Simone! My wife did this!” Harrison gasped, choking against Viktor’s grip.
“We don't do business with your wife,” Viktor growled, pulling a suppressed pistol from his jacket and pressing the cold barrel directly beneath Harrison’s chin. “We do business with the head of Blake Enterprises. If our cargo is seized or if our $10 million is not returned by midnight, you won't live to see your daughter born. Do you understand me, little boy?”
“I understand! I understand!” Harrison wept, completely humiliated. “I’ll get the money! Natasha has access to a private safety deposit box at the Swiss Union Bank in Zurich! There’s $15 million in bearer bonds!”
“Then you better get her to open it,” Viktor shoved Harrison to the marble floor, pocketing his weapon. “We will be watching you at your grand baby shower this afternoon. Make a single wrong move, and you won't leave that garden alive.”
The syndicate enforcers turned and walked out of the mansion.
Harrison lay on the cold marble floor, gasping for air, his expensive clothes soaked in cold sweat.
He pulled himself up, grabbed his phone, and dialed Natasha.
“Natasha!” Harrison screamed into the receiver. “Get your dress on! We’re going to that damn baby shower at the Botanical Gardens! We are going to corner Simone in front of the press, force her to sign the asset release forms, or I am a dead man!”

“Harrison, federal marshals took everything from my penthouse!” Natasha wailed hysterically from the other end. “I don't have a penny left!”
“Then Simone is our only way out!” Harrison roared. “We end this today!”
