Chapter 12 - Labor in the Eye of the Storm and the Final Confrontation

At 8:30 p.m., a heavy storm rolled over the city, drenching the abandoned warehouses and rusting cargo cranes of the 9th Street shipping pier in sheets of blinding rain.

Simone arrived in a heavily armored SUV driven by Marcus Kane. She wore a thick waterproof coat over her maternity dress, carrying a duplicate black leather binder in her hands.

Undercover FBI tactical vans were positioned in the shadows of surrounding shipping containers, their snipers zeroed in through night-vision scopes.

Simone stepped out into the rain under the shelter of an open-air cargo pavilion.

Out of the darkness emerged Natasha, soaked to the bone, her hair matted against her face, holding a small silver revolver in her trembling hand. Standing next to her was Harrison, looking like a shattered ghost of his former self, shivering uncontrollably in the freezing rain.

“Give me the ledger, Simone!” Natasha screamed over the roar of the thunder. “Give it to me, and we let you walk away!”

“Natasha, put the gun down,” Simone said, her voice steady and powerful against the howling wind. “It’s over. Look around you.”

Harrison stepped forward, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “Simone... please! Just give them the offshore keys! Viktor’s men are going to kill me! If you ever loved me, if our seven years of marriage meant anything to you, save my life!”

Simone looked at Harrison with profound pity and absolute disgust.

“You traded seven years of marriage for lies, greed, and a penthouse with my best friend,” Simone said coldly. “You signed your own death warrant the day you decided to treat your wife and unborn child as disposable pawns.”

Suddenly, the headlights of three black SUVs pierced the darkness. Viktor Voronin and six heavily armed syndicate enforcers stepped out, their automatic rifles raised.

“Enough talking,” Viktor commanded, marching toward them. “Where is the ledger?”

Natasha pointed her gun at Simone. “She has it! Shoot her and take it!”

Before Natasha could pull the trigger, bright, blinding tactical searchlights detonated from every shipping container and warehouse rooftop.

“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!”

Siren wails shattered the night as dozens of federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the pavilion, their laser sights painting Viktor, his enforcers, Natasha, and Harrison in a web of crimson dots.

Viktor’s men dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands in surrender.

Natasha screamed in pure fury, raising her revolver toward Simone—

BANG!

A single precision sniper round struck the gun from Natasha’s hand, sending the weapon spinning across the wet concrete. FBI agents tackled Natasha and Viktor to the ground, securing them in heavy steel zip-ties.

Harrison fell to his knees in the puddles, sobbing hysterically as federal marshals cuffed his hands behind his back.

In that exact moment, a violent, overwhelming contraction seized Simone’s body. Her water broke, splashing onto the concrete floor.

Simone gasped, clutching her belly as intense, genuine labor pain hit her with the force of a tidal wave.

“Simone!” Marcus yelled, rushing to catch her as her knees buckled. “Medics! We need a tactical trauma unit right now! The baby is coming!”

As federal agents dragged a screaming Natasha and a weeping Harrison toward the armored paddy wagons, Simone was lifted gently onto a paramedic stretcher.

Through the blinding rain and flashing red and blue emergency lights, Simone looked down at her stomach, breathing steadily through the agony, a radiant, triumphant smile breaking across her face.

Her daughter was coming into a world where the monsters had already been vanquished.
