Chapter 9 - The Police Interrogation of the Strategy Officer

At 2:00 p.m., while sitting in a booth at a cheap diner near the train station, Julian was surrounded by four armed Federal Marshals and Detective Marcus Vance of the Boston Police Financial Crimes Unit.
"Julian Vance," Detective Vance announced, pulling a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement."
Julian didn't fight. He was too broken, too exhausted, and too terrified. He let the marshals pull his arms behind his back, the cold steel clicking around his wrists with a sharp, final snap.
Inside the federal interrogation room, Julian broke down within twenty minutes.
"It was Camilla's idea!" Julian wept, his face buried in his handcuffed hands, tears soaking into the metal table. "She told me Aurelia was going under anyway! She said everyone on Wall Street does it! She set up the shell companies in Delaware! I was just trying to build a nest egg for our future!"
"You stole fourteen million dollars from your own wife's company, Julian," the federal prosecutor said coldly. "You stole her mother's diamond earrings. You brought your mistress into her home. And you thought you were smart enough to get away with it."

"I'll sign the divorce papers!" Julian pleaded, looking up with red, swollen eyes. "I'll give up every claim to her estate! I'll testify against Camilla! Just please... don't send me to a federal penitentiary!"
"Sign the confession, Julian," the prosecutor said, sliding the document across the table. "And we'll let the judge know how cooperative you were."
