Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Lockdown at Midnight

By midnight, the party had completely dissolved.

The grand ballroom was empty, but on the forty-second floor of the Aurelia Systems headquarters across the street, the lights were blazing.

I sat at the head of the boardroom table—the seat where Julian had dreamed of sitting as president. Beside me were Malcolm Reed, General Counsel Sarah Jenkins, and lead forensic auditor David Cole.

The double glass doors of the executive suite rattled violently.

Julian was standing outside the security turnstiles, furiously swiping his black corporate keycard against the electronic reader.

BEEP-BEEP. ACCESS DENIED.

"Open this damn door!" Julian roared through the glass, pounding his fists against the reinforced panel. "My personal belongings are in that office! I have client files! Audrey, open this door right now!"

I pressed the intercom button on the boardroom console.

"Your personal belongings have already been boxed and sent to the curbside loading dock, Julian," I said calmly. "Your corporate laptop, your hard drives, and your encrypted phone are now the property of the United States Attorney's Office under an active federal preservation order."

"You set me up!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking through the intercom speaker. "You married me under false pretenses! You let me believe you were just an ordinary girl living on a small trust!"

"I married a man who claimed he loved me for who I was, Julian," I said, looking through the glass at his ruined, sweating face. "I didn't realize that the moment you smelled money, you would turn into a thief. The security guards will escort you to the street now. If you step onto this floor again, you will be arrested for criminal trespassing."

Two armed building guards stepped behind Julian, grabbed his arms, and pulled him away from the glass.

His screams of rage echoed down the elevator shaft as the doors closed, leaving the forty-second floor in total, triumphant peace.
