Chapter 8 - The Man Who Owned Sen Asked for My Trust While Hiding His Family’s Worst Secret

Enzo listened to the recording without interrupting.

When it ended, he asked for another playback.

I watched his face as his father spoke.

There was no surprise in his eyes.

Only grief.

"You knew he was involved," I said.

"I knew he had covered up something."

"You didn't tell me."

"I didn't know what it was."

I turned away.

His excuses sounded too familiar.

My mother had been surrounded by important men.

Every one had found a reason to wait.

Enzo followed me outside the lawyer's office.

"I can step away from this investigation," he said.

"You should," I answered.

He nodded once.

That surprised me.

He transferred relevant company records to counsel.

He also disclosed his family's ownership interests.

Then he removed himself from the legal strategy meetings.

Bruno continued assisting as an independent witness.

I didn't forgive Enzo that afternoon.

I didn't need to.

I needed evidence that could survive in court.

The documents revealed a holding company named Harbor Gate.

It purchased distressed leases throughout Federal Hill.

Cain had approved the acquisitions.

The profits flowed through a chain of shell entities.

One account led to a charity bearing Rinaldi's name.

I stared at the bank transfers.

"Was this charity real?" I asked.

Our lawyer shook her head.

"It existed on paper."

I felt cold.

The charity had once offered my mother assistance.

She had refused it.

I remembered her saying, "Free money costs something."

Now I understood why.

That evening, Enzo left a letter at Brennan's.

He listed every record he had surrendered.

At the bottom he wrote one sentence.

"You don't owe me trust. You deserve the truth."

May you like

I folded the letter without answering.

It was the first promise from him I believed.
