Chapter 10 - Bruno Followed the Missing Ledger to Someone Enzo Could Never Suspect

Bruno found the missing ledger through a retired accountant.

The man had worked for the Rinaldi family.

He agreed to meet us at a public library.

He arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

Inside were photocopies of the original ledger.

Several entries showed Cain's payments to inspectors.

Others showed money moving through Harbor Gate.

One name appeared beside every large transfer.

Victor Rinaldi.

Enzo's uncle.

He had handled family accounts for decades.

Bruno stared at the pages.

"Victor told us those accounts were closed."

The accountant shook his head.

"They were never closed. Just renamed."

Our lawyer contacted investigators immediately.

She insisted the accountant give a recorded statement.

He agreed only after asking about witness protection.

I understood his fear.

For years, silence had kept him employed.

Now truth might cost him everything.

Enzo learned about his uncle from his own attorney.

He called me that evening.

"I won't ask you to comfort me," he said.

"Good," I replied.

He exhaled.

"But I want you to know I believe you."

I sat on the kitchen stairs.

"Believing me isn't enough."

"I know."

The next morning, Enzo filed a sworn disclosure.

He documented Victor's access to family accounts.

He surrendered copies of board minutes.

Then he resigned from Harbor Gate's board.

Reporters called it a family war.

To me, it looked like a man choosing a side.

I didn't know whether I could love him.

I knew I could finally respect him.

That night, Bruno brought one more discovery.

A recent bank withdrawal matched the amount missing from the wallet.

The withdrawal had been made by Preston Cain.

But the account belonged to Victor Rinaldi.
