Chapter 5 - Marisol Found the Camera Footage Cain Had Ordered Everyone to Erase

Marisol knew where Sen kept its older security recordings.
The manager thought the archive had been wiped.
He didn't know a technician maintained backup drives.
We met the technician at a lawyer's office.
His name was Paul Dyer.
He insisted on written protection before speaking.
Our lawyer documented every file he produced.
The footage showed my mother entering Sen years ago.
She carried the red-spined ledger.
Cain followed her into a service corridor.
The next camera showed her leaving alone.
She looked frightened.
She held nothing in her hands.
A minute later, Cain carried a box outside.
A dark sedan waited near the loading dock.
We couldn't see its driver.
Marisol covered her mouth.
"I thought she ran away," she whispered.
I replayed the footage twice.
My mother's face filled the screen.
She looked younger than I remembered.
For one awful second, I wanted to touch it.
Then Paul opened another file.
It showed Cain meeting a city inspector.
An envelope changed hands.
The inspector later approved disputed renovations.
Enzo asked Paul for the original metadata.
Paul supplied it directly to our lawyer.
Nobody was allowed to edit the footage.
We had learned enough about missing records.
That afternoon, Cain called Marisol.
He offered her job back with a raise.
She put him on speaker.
"I only need the backup drive," he said.
"It belongs to the company."
"Then ask the company lawyer," she replied.
His voice turned sharp.
"You have no idea who you're protecting."
Marisol looked at me.
"Maybe not," she said.
"But I know who I'm not protecting."
Cain hung up.
Minutes later, Paul received a message.
His storage unit had been broken into.
The original camera recorder was missing.
Then our lawyer's phone rang.
A detective wanted to speak with us immediately.
They had found a car in the river.

Inside it was a woman's coat.
The label read Evelyn Vance.
