Chapter 7 - I Opened My Mother’s Storage Locker and Found a Photograph of the Man Who Betrayed Her

The river car belonged to my mother.
Police confirmed the registration.
They couldn't explain why it had surfaced now.
The coat had been preserved in a sealed compartment.
There was no evidence she had died inside.
I left the station carrying more questions.
An old bank statement led us to a storage locker.
My mother had paid for it in advance.
The bank held a sealed authorization naming me.
I had never received their earlier notices.
Our lawyer obtained the access documents.
I opened the locker with Marisol beside me.
Inside stood a chair, a suitcase, and two boxes.
The suitcase contained ordinary winter clothes.
I pressed my face into one old scarf.
It smelled only of dust.
The first box held copies of land deeds.
The second contained photographs and handwritten notes.
One photograph showed my mother with Enzo's father.
Another showed Preston Cain beside a city official.
A third showed someone I recognized immediately.
Hollis Brennan.
He was younger, standing outside the old restaurant.
My mother had written beneath the photograph.
"First family they tried to remove."
I called Hollis.
He remembered my mother coming to ask questions.
"She told me not to sign anything," he said.
"Then she stopped coming."
At the bottom of the box lay a cassette tape.
A label carried one word.
CONFESSION.
We took it to a licensed audio technician.
He played a digital transfer for us.
A man's voice described falsified property records.
Another voice asked about Evelyn Vance.
The first man said she knew too much.
I knew the second voice.
It belonged to Enzo's father.
May you like
But the first voice made me shake.
It belonged to Preston Cain.
