Chapter 6 - The Brennan Brothers Refused to Sell, and Someone Turned Their Kitchen Against Them
Hollis insisted on opening Brennan's the next morning.
"People still need breakfast," he said.
Dale checked the back door twice.
Marisol joined us to serve coffee.
I washed dishes and watched the windows.
Enzo's lawyer filed for an emergency injunction.
The court suspended the disputed lease increase.
For the first time, Hollis looked relieved.
The relief lasted less than an hour.
A health inspector arrived with two assistants.
They claimed an anonymous complaint reported contamination.
They opened cabinets and photographed the freezer.
One assistant found a sealed container behind flour sacks.
Hollis had never seen it.
The label carried a hazardous cleaning symbol.
The inspector ordered the kitchen closed pending testing.
Hollis gripped the counter.
"We've served this neighborhood for forty years."
The inspector wouldn't meet his eyes.
Outside, someone had already posted closure notices.
I photographed the container's location.
Marisol remembered a delivery man arriving before dawn.
He'd worn a jacket from a company called Northline.
The delivery register showed no scheduled shipment.
Dale found fresh tire marks near the loading door.
We gave everything to the authorities.
Enzo paid for independent testing through counsel.
He refused to enter the kitchen without permission.
Hollis noticed that.
"Your father wouldn't have asked," he said.
Enzo looked at him.
"I know."
That night, we served sandwiches outside.
Neighbors brought folding tables and thermoses.
A retired teacher collected signatures.
The hardware store donated paper plates.
Hollis stood beside his ruined porcelain plate.
He touched the pieces through his coat.
"We aren't gone yet," he told the crowd.
I watched Marisol collect names for the hearing.
For the first time, the neighborhood looked organized.
