Chapter 8 - The Red Laser on The Living Room Glass, An Ambush in The Rain, and Norah’s Reckless Courage

Luca walked over to Norah, his face completely devoid of mercy.

He took out a crisp silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently blotted the wine from Norah’s shoulder.

Then he turned to Don Moretti, who had just rushed over with two guards.

“Control your daughter, Moretti,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “Or I will strip your territory in Queens and hand it to Marco by midnight.”

Moretti grabbed Elena by the arm, his face pale with dread, dragging her out of the venue without another word.

Luca looked down at Norah, a rare fire burning in his eyes.

“Are you hurt?”

“Only my dress,” Norah said, breathing slightly fast. “I’m fine.”

“Good. Because we are leaving.”

The drive back to the estate was heavy with rain.

As the armored SUV pulled into the winding private driveway through the dense woods, the lead escort vehicle suddenly swerved.

BANG.

A heavy sniper round shattered the bulletproof front windshield of the lead car.

“Ambush!” Marco shouted through the comms. “Three o'clock! Tree line!”

The SUV screeched to a halt as automatic gunfire erupted into the darkness.

Leo screamed from the back seat, covering his ears.

Luca immediately drew a suppressed firearm from inside his coat, his instincts taking over instantly.

“Stay down!” Luca commanded, pushing Norah and Leo toward the floorboards.

A second shooter approached the right side of the vehicle with a breaching charge.

Luca kicked open the driver’s side door, firing three rapid shots into the mist, taking down one assailant. But a second attacker lunged from the shadows behind the car with an assault rifle pointed directly at Luca’s blind spot.

Norah saw it through the tinted window.

Without thinking, Norah grabbed the heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted beneath the passenger seat, kicked the door wide open with all her strength, and hurled the heavy cylinder directly into the gunman’s face.

CLANG.

The gunman collapsed in the mud, disoriented, giving Marco just enough time to eliminate the threat.

Luca stood in the rain, his gun lowered, staring at Norah who was standing in the downpour, her ivory dress soaked, her breathing ragged, guarding the rear door where Leo was hiding.

Luca walked over, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her hard against his chest.

“You insane, magnificent woman,” he breathed against her hair.
