Chapter 9 - Christina’s Recovery

The physical bruises on Christina’s jaw and arms had begun to fade, but the emotional recovery from the night of the confrontation required patience and care.

That evening, the kitchen smelled of garlic, rosemary, and roasting chicken—a familiar family recipe that Christina and Jonathan used to cook together before Florence had ever entered their lives.

Christina stood at the counter, chopping vegetables with a steady rhythm, while little Leo sat at the kitchen island, enthusiastically coloring pictures of dinosaurs with thick wax crayons.

Jonathan walked in, tying an old canvas apron around his waist. “Need any help with the carrots, chef?”

Christina looked up and smiled, a genuine, warm expression that reached her eyes. “Only if you promise not to slice them unevenly like you did last time, Dad.”

Jonathan chuckled, walking over to stand beside her at the counter. He watched her for a moment, noticing the relaxed posture, the absence of the constant tension she had carried for two years while trying to warn him about Florence.

“How are you feeling, sweetheart?” Jonathan asked softly, his tone turning serious. “Really?”

Christina set down her knife, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel. She leaned against the marble counter and looked her father in the eye.

“I’m feeling like myself again, Dad,” she admitted softly. “For a long time, I felt like I was screaming into a void. I thought I was losing you to someone who only cared about what you owned. That Tahoe weekend... when you came back looking so confused and tired, I knew something terrible had happened, but I didn't have proof.”

“You had courage,” Jonathan said, taking her hand and squeezing it gently. “And you raised a brilliant, brave little boy who saved us both.”

Leo looked up from his coloring book at the sound of his name, flashing a bright, gap-toothed grin before returning to his green tyrannosaurus rex.

“We’re a team, right?” Christina smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears of relief.

“A team,” Jonathan agreed, kissing the top of her head. “And nobody is ever breaking this family apart again.”
