Chapter 15 - A New Dawn

The sun rose over the Prescott estate on a crisp November morning, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold.
Inside the grand kitchen, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, cinnamon pancakes, and sizzling bacon filled the air. Jonathan sat at the island, reading the morning financial paper while wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater.
The front door opened with a cheerful bounce, and little Leo ran into the kitchen, his backpack half-zipped, chattering excitedly about a school field trip to the science museum.
“Grandpa! Grandpa! Look, I have my red jacket!” Leo announced, spinning around to show off his dinosaur-themed zipper.
Jonathan set his paper down, a wide, genuine smile spreading across his face. He scooped Leo up into his arms, kissing his cheek. “Looking sharp, buddy! Ready to see some dinosaur bones?”
Christina walked in behind him, carrying her coffee mug, laughing as she zipped up Leo's jacket properly and straightened his collar.
“You’re spoiling him, Dad,” she teased, though her eyes were shining with happiness.
“That’s my job as a grandfather,” Jonathan replied warmly, setting Leo down so the boy could grab a slice of apple.
He looked out the large kitchen window toward the manicured gardens and the winding driveway. The past few months had been a tempest—a terrifying reminder of how vulnerable pride can make a person, but also a profound testament to the strength of family, the sharpness of truth, and the unexpected heroism of a three-year-old boy with a scratched black USB drive.
Jonathan walked over to the entryway, picked up his car keys, and paused to look at a brand-new framed photograph hanging by the hallway table.
It wasn't a wedding portrait.
It was a picture taken last weekend at the park: Jonathan, Christina, and Leo laughing together under the golden autumn leaves, completely happy, completely secure, and completely free.

“Come on, team,” Jonathan called out, tossing his keys into his palm. “Let’s go.”
The heavy oak door swung open, welcoming the bright morning light.
