Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The transition from a high-society wedding to a high-security interrogation room took less than twenty minutes.

The Grand Bellevue’s private VIP holding suite—usually reserved for celebrity green rooms—was now serving as an impromptu command center. Marcus Vance stood by the mahogany desk, laying out physical copies of bank transfers, forged corporate resolutions, and notarized affidavits. Two local police detectives sat across from a chair where Florence Fairmont sat in her ruined ivory wedding gown, her hair coming undone, her mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

Jonathan stood by the window, looking out over the manicured hotel gardens. Leo was currently downstairs with Rebecca, eating chocolate ice cream and watching cartoons, safely insulated from the ugliness of the morning. But Christina was on speakerphone, her voice clear and steady as she listened from Rebecca’s apartment.

“Miss Fairmont,” Detective Miller, a weathered veteran with sharp gray eyes, broke the heavy silence. He slid a printed document across the table. “This is the corporate transfer agreement filed with the state registry three months ago. It bears a signature matching Jonathan Prescott’s. However, our handwriting analyst has already confirmed what Mr. Prescott asserted: it’s a digital vector trace overlaid onto a fabricated document.”

Florence kept her jaw clamped shut, staring stubbornly at the table, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists inside her lap.

“You didn't just target my company, Florence,” Jonathan said without turning around from the window. His voice was dangerously quiet. “You targeted my family. You tried to isolate me from my daughter, you manipulated my life, and last night, you laid hands on my child in her own home.”

“Prove it,” Florence spat, her voice raspy and devoid of its former charm. She looked up, her eyes flashing with defiance. “The video was taken without my consent in a private residence. It’s inadmissible hearsay. And as for the documents, someone in your office could have drafted them. You have no direct proof that I forged your signature or administered anything to you in Tahoe.”

Marcus Vance let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He tapped a stack of papers on the desk.

“Florence, honey,” Marcus said smoothly, adopting a patronizing tone that made her flinch. “You’re a brilliant corporate assistant, but you clearly skipped white-collar crime 101. When you transferred those funds from Prescott Enterprises to your offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands, you used your personal laptop’s IP address—the same IP address registered to your corporate apartment Wi-Fi.”

Florence’s eyes darted toward Marcus, the color draining entirely from her face.

“Furthermore,” Marcus continued, picking up another folder, “we executed an emergency search warrant on your apartment twenty minutes ago, courtesy of a judge who happened to be a guest at your aborted wedding. Guess what we found in your bedside drawer?”

Silence stretched in the room, thick enough to cut with a knife.

“A vial of prescription sedative—midazolam—matching the exact chemical profile found in the bloodwork logs from Jonathan’s medical checkup following the Tahoe trip,” Marcus finished, dropping the evidence bag onto the table with a sharp click. “Along with a signed confession notebook where you liked to outline your timeline for taking over the estate.”

Florence slumped back in her chair, the last vestige of her defiance crumbling into dust. The elaborate castle of lies she had spent two years building had collapsed in less than an hour.

Detective Miller stood up, clicking his handcuffs open with a metallic snap. “Florence Fairmont, you’re under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, administration of illicit substances, and domestic assault. Stand up, please.”

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around her delicate wrists—wrists that had poured morning coffee and accepted diamond tennis bracelets—Florence didn't look at Marcus or the detectives. Her eyes locked onto Jonathan's back as he turned away from the window.

“You’ll regret this, Jonathan,” she whispered, her voice laced with venom as the officers hauled her to her feet. “You’re an old man alone in a big empty house. Without me, you’re nothing.”

“Without you,” Jonathan replied, turning to face her with steady, unblinking eyes, “I have my daughter, my grandson, and my life back. Take her away.”
