Chapter 14 - The Verdict

The courtroom was packed to capacity when the gavel finally fell.

Media outlets from across the state had gathered outside the courthouse, eager to report on the final chapter of the high-society wedding scandal that had captivated the public. Inside, the atmosphere was heavy and solemn.

Florence Fairmont sat at the defense table, flanked by two court-appointed attorneys. She looked hollowed out, her orange jumpsuit hanging loosely on her frame, her arrogance entirely replaced by a defeated, bitter resignation.

Jonathan and Christina sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Marcus Vance. Leo was safely at daycare with Rebecca, spared the grim reality of judicial sentencing.

The presiding judge, a stern woman with decades of bench experience, adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents before her.

“Florence Fairmont,” the judge’s voice echoed clearly through the quiet courtroom. “You have been found guilty on all counts: grand federal larceny, identity theft, corporate document forgery, and aggravated domestic assault. The scope of your premeditation, the abuse of trust, and the calculated manipulation of vulnerable individuals represent an egregious violation of the law.”

Florence kept her eyes fixed firmly on the wooden table, her jaw clenched tight.

“This court sentences you to fifteen years in federal penitentiary, with no eligibility for parole for the first ten years, alongside full financial restitution and asset forfeiture,” the judge pronounced, bringing the gavel down with a sharp, resonant crack.

Bang.

The trial was over. The predator who had nearly destroyed Prescott Enterprises and torn a family apart was heading behind bars for over a decade.

As the bailiffs escorted Florence away, she glanced back briefly toward the gallery. Her eyes locked onto Jonathan for one final, venomous second before the heavy wooden doors swung shut behind her.

Jonathan didn't flinch. He simply looked away, turning his attention to Christina, who reached out and took his hand.

“It’s over, Dad,” she whispered, a tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek.

“It’s over,” Jonathan agreed, standing up alongside her. “Let’s go home.”
