Chapter 8 - The Ledger of Blood and Betrayal

The terrace of the Drake Hotel became a battleground of wills.
Salvatore Leone’s face twisted in desperate rage. Knowing he had no legal or underworld backing left, he reached beneath his jacket for a hidden snub-nosed revolver.
“If I’m going down, Moretti, I’m taking your new whore with me!” Salvatore roared, aiming the barrel directly at my chest.
Time seemed to slow to an agonizing crawl.
Before Salvatore’s finger could squeeze the trigger, Vincent moved with inhuman speed. He threw himself between me and the weapon, his massive frame shielding me entirely.
Crack!
A gunshot echoed against the terrace stone, muffled by the howling wind.
I gasped in horror as Vincent slammed into Salvatore with the force of an avalanche, disarming the older mobster with a sickening crunch of breaking wrist bones. The revolver clattered across the marble floor.
Marco and the security team swarmed Salvatore, driving him face-down onto the freezing terrace tiles and securing his arms in heavy steel zip-ties within seconds.
“Clear the balcony! Get him into the private freight elevator!” Marco commanded.
I rushed forward, my hands shaking violently as I grabbed Vincent’s arms. “Vincent! Vincent, you’re hit!”
Blood was blooming rapidly across the right shoulder of his tailored tuxedo jacket, staining the crisp white shirt beneath.
Vincent barely winced. He reached up with his uninjured left hand, pulling me tightly against his chest, inspecting my face with frantic, burning concern. “Are you hurt, Clara? Did he touch you?”
Tears spilled over my lashes as I looked at the dark red spreading through his jacket. “I’m fine! But you took a bullet for me! You’re bleeding!”
“It’s a graze,” Vincent dismissed it with a ragged breath, pressing a fierce, possessive kiss against my temple. “A scratch through the meat. I would take a thousand bullets before I let anyone harm a single hair on your head.”
Within five minutes, the hotel’s private medical wing—pre-arranged by Marco for emergencies—had Vincent seated on an examination table. The resident family physician quickly cleansed the wound, extracted the shallow bullet fragment, and applied surgical stitches to close the clean laceration.
Throughout the entire procedure, Vincent never let go of my hand. His grip was warm, strong, and unyielding.
Once the doctor finished and stepped out to prepare the discharge paperwork, Vincent pulled me between his knees as he sat on the edge of the medical bed.
“Salvatore has been handed over to the federal authorities alongside the complete ledger from the music box,” Vincent explained quietly. “Dominic’s offshore accounts, the hit contracts, the illegal weapons shipments—everything Sofia documented has been submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Salvatore Leone will spend the rest of his life in a federal maximum-security penitentiary in Florence, Colorado.”
I leaned my forehead against his uninjured shoulder, the adrenaline finally subsiding, leaving behind a profound sense of relief. “It’s truly over now?”
“It’s over,” Vincent affirmed, his hand gently stroking my back. “The shadow that hung over Isabella for eleven months is gone forever.”

He lifted my chin, forcing me to look into his piercing gray eyes, which were now filled with an overwhelming, vulnerable devotion.
“Now, Clara... it’s time for us to build our future.”
