Chapter 4 - The Fortress on Lake Forest and a Sudden Promotion

The piercing shriek of the estate’s tactical alarm shattered the midnight silence. Red emergency lights bathed the vaulted ceilings of the suite in a crimson glow.

Instinct took over before thought. I bolted toward the nursery, but Vincent was already moving. He crossed the room in three massive strides, drawing a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from a concealed holster beneath his waistband with terrifying efficiency.

“Stay behind me, Clara!” he commanded.

Inside the nursery, both girls were awake. Ellie was sitting up, rubbing her eyes in confusion, while Isabella was trembling violently, her small hands clutching her ears as the sirens wailed.

“Daddy!” Isabella cried out, the fear in her newly recovered voice cutting through the noise.

Vincent scooped Isabella into his left arm while I rushed to the bed and pulled Ellie tightly against my chest. Ellie buried her face into my neck, whimpering softly.

“Marco!” Vincent barked into the radio earpiece he had just snapped into place. “Report!”

“Three black SUVs breached the southern perimeter gate, Boss!” Marco’s voice crackled through the comms amidst the distant, muffled sound of automatic gunfire echoing from the front driveway. “They bypassed the outer sensors using Dominic’s security bypass codes! It’s a hit squad—Leone’s mercenary division!”

“They knew Dominic was captured,” Vincent snarled, his jaw tightening into iron. “They came to burn the evidence before the Five Families convene tomorrow. Seal the panic room on Level Two. Clara, follow me!”

Vincent led us out of the suite into a private service corridor concealed behind a wooden panel in the master study. The air inside the narrow passageway was cool and smelled of reinforced concrete and copper wiring. We descended a spiral steel staircase at a rapid pace, Vincent holding Isabella securely against his chest with his weapon raised, scanning every corner with lethal precision.

We reached the subterranean bunker—a heavy, vault-like room lined with reinforced titanium plates, surveillance monitors, and emergency medical supplies. Vincent tapped a twelve-digit code into the digital keypad, and the heavy door hissed open.

He placed Isabella inside on a leather sofa, then turned to take Ellie from my arms, setting her gently beside Isabella.

“Girls,” Vincent said, dropping to one knee before them, his voice completely calm despite the muffled thuds of explosions vibrating through the reinforced concrete above. “You are in the safest room in the entire state. Look at the monitors. You can see the gardens, you can see the fish in the pond. Clara is going to stay right here with you.”

“Daddy, don't go!” Isabella pleaded, reaching for his sleeve. “Please!”

Vincent took his daughter’s small hand and kissed her knuckles. “I have to take out the trash, Bella. When I come back, the bad men will never be able to come near our home again. I promise you.”

He looked up at me. His gray eyes were dark with an impending tempest, but when they locked onto mine, there was a fierce, unwavering protectiveness in them.

“Clara, the manual lock is behind that red lever,” Vincent instructed, pointing to a steel handle beside the blast door. “Once I step out, pull it down. The door will not open for anyone except my biometric handprint or Marco’s voice override. Do you understand?”

I swallowed the lump of fear in my throat and nodded firmly. “I understand.”

“If anything goes wrong—if the secondary alarms breach—there is an escape tunnel behind the utility cabinet that leads half a mile north to the boathouse. The keys to the armored launch are in the cabinet.” He stepped closer, his hand reaching out to gently touch the side of my neck, his thumb brushing against my jawline with unexpected warmth. “Keep them safe, Clara. I’m trusting you with my whole world.”

“I will protect them with my life, Vincent,” I promised, my voice steady.

He gave me a single, resolute nod, turned on his heel, and stepped out into the corridor.

I immediately grabbed the red lever and pulled down with all my weight. The massive steel bolts slammed into place with a deafening thud, sealing the three of us inside the impregnable vault.

On the surveillance screens covering the east wall, I watched the nightmare unfold in high-definition video feeds.

A dozen heavily armed men in tactical gear were advancing through the manicured rose gardens of the estate. But Vincent Moretti did not wait behind cover for them to approach. He moved through the estate grounds like a vengeful phantom. Alongside Marco and his elite security force, Vincent unleashed a devastating, coordinated counter-assault.

I watched Vincent drop two gunmen near the marble fountain with flawless marksmanship, moving with tactical brilliance, using the architecture of his home as an insurmountable fortress. Within six minutes, the remaining attackers were routed, disarmed, and forced to their knees in the middle of the courtyard.

Beside me on the sofa, Ellie was humming softly, holding Isabella’s hand.

“See, Bella?” Ellie whispered gently. “Your daddy is a superhero. He’s chasing the monsters away.”

Isabella wiped a tear from her cheek, clutching Barnaby the rabbit to her chest. “He’s not a superhero. He’s my daddy.”

“Same thing,” Ellie declared with utter four-year-old certainty.

Ten minutes later, the heavy locking mechanism of the blast door hummed to life. The hydraulic seals hissed, and the thick titanium door slowly swung inward.

Vincent stood in the doorway. His white shirt was stained with soot and rain, a shallow cut bleeding across his left cheekbone, but his eyes were clear, fierce, and entirely triumphant.

Isabella leaped off the sofa and hurled herself into his arms. Vincent caught her, lifting her high into the air and burying his face in her hair as a deep, shuddering sigh of relief escaped his chest.

“It’s over, Bella,” Vincent murmured. “The house is secure.”

He carried Isabella over to where Ellie and I stood. He set his daughter down, reached out, and pulled both Ellie and me into his arms, enveloping us in an embrace that smelled of cold rain, gunpowder, and an overwhelming sense of safety.

“You did incredible, Clara,” Vincent whispered into my hair, his chest pressing against mine.

For the first time in five years, standing in a concrete bunker beneath a besieged mansion, I felt completely and undeniably at home.
