Chapter 6 - When the First Shadow Crossed the Gates

By noon that afternoon, the third-floor master suite had been transformed into a bustling atelier of high fashion.

Vincent had enlisted the services of Madame Delacroix, Chicago’s most exclusive haute couture designer. Four assistants carried racks of breathtaking evening gowns into the suite, while jewelers from Michigan Avenue presented velvet-lined cases glistening with diamonds, sapphires, and platinum.

Ellie sat cross-legged on an ottoman, her mouth wide open in awe as I emerged from the dressing area wearing an emerald-green silk velvet gown.

The dress was a masterpiece. It hugged my waist, cascaded into an elegant floor-length train, and featured an off-the-shoulder neckline that highlighted my collarbones and the delicate diamond pendant Vincent had sent up earlier that morning.

“Mommy!” Ellie squealed, clapping her hands together. “You look like a real princess! Just like the ones in Bella’s book!”

Isabella nodded vigorously from the armchair. “Daddy is going to drop his coffee when he sees you.”

Madame Delacroix clapped her hands in delight. “Magnifique! The emerald green complements your auburn hair and porcelain skin perfectly, Miss Davis. Mr. Moretti has impeccable taste.”

While the assistants made the final adjustments to the hem, Marco entered the suite, carrying a secure tablet. His expression was stern and professional.

“Excuse me, Madame Delacroix,” Marco said, his deep voice commanding immediate attention. “Clara, Mr. Moretti requests your presence in the tactical room before the dress rehearsal.”

“Is something wrong, Marco?” I asked, gathering the train of the emerald gown in my hands.

“Just safety protocols for tomorrow evening,” Marco replied smoothly.

I left the girls in the care of Mrs. Gable and two armed guards outside the nursery doors and followed Marco down to the estate’s security operations center.

The tactical room was filled with banks of high-resolution monitors displaying street-level cameras around the Drake Hotel, motorcade routes, and satellite feeds of downtown Chicago. Vincent was standing over a large blueprint of the Grand Ballroom, discussing logistics with three senior security lieutenants.

When the heavy door clicked open and I stepped inside, the entire room went completely silent.

The lieutenants looked up, their eyes widening slightly.

Vincent turned around—and froze.

For five long seconds, the most ruthless billionaire in the Midwest simply stared at me. His gray eyes swept from the crown of my styled hair down the length of the emerald silk to the tips of my heels. The breath caught visibly in his chest, his posture stiffening as if struck by lightning.

“Leave us,” Vincent commanded the lieutenants, never taking his eyes off me.

The security team gathered their folders and filed out of the room at once, Marco giving me an amused, knowing wink before closing the heavy steel door behind them.

“You... look breathtaking, Clara,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, husky register that made my knees feel weak.

“Isabella said you would drop your coffee,” I teased softly, trying to mask my racing heartbeat.

Vincent took three slow, deliberate strides toward me until he was standing so close I could feel the radiant heat of his body. He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing the exposed curve of my shoulder, sending a delicious jolt of electricity across my skin.

“If I had a cup, I certainly would have,” he admitted, his gaze intense and unapologetic. “You are a vision, Clara. Tomorrow night, every man in that ballroom will envy me, and every woman will wonder who the queen standing beside the Moretti king truly is.”

“Vincent...” I whispered, feeling the raw intensity between us growing almost unbearable. “Why are you doing all of this? The salary, the dresses, taking me to the gala... you could have simply paid me a bonus and hired an army of nannies.”

Vincent’s expression softened, the ruthless boss fading away to reveal the man beneath. He lifted both hands, gently cupping my face, his thumbs stroking my cheekbones.

“Because for eleven months, this house was a tomb,” Vincent whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I had all the money and power in the world, and I was completely dead inside. Then you and Ellie brought light back into these halls. You brought my daughter back from the dark. And for the first time since Sofia died... you made me feel alive again.”

Before I could process his words, Vincent leaned down and captured my lips with his.

The kiss was everything I had secretly dreamed of and feared—fierce, demanding, yet exquisitely tender. It was the kiss of a man who claimed what was his, who protected what he loved with unyielding possessiveness. I parted my lips with a soft gasp, tangling my fingers into the soft, dark hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him closer as the world around us ceased to exist.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, breathing heavily, his forehead rested against mine, his eyes burning with an undeniable promise.

“Tomorrow night, the world will know you belong to me, Clara,” Vincent murmured against my lips. “And I will tear down anyone who tries to take this happiness away from us.”
