Chapter 7 - A Dangerous Invitation to the Lions’ Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne towers, and Chicago’s most powerful elite. Politicians, federal judges, foreign ambassadors, and prominent business magnates mingled in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns, oblivious to the fact that the man hosting the evening was the undisputed sovereign of the city’s shadow world.

When the massive double doors of the ballroom opened and the announcer declared, “Mr. Vincent Moretti and Miss Clara Davis,” a collective hush rippled through the hundreds of guests.

I took a steadying breath, my hand resting firmly on Vincent’s arm. Vincent looked devastatingly regal in a custom black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding height.

As we walked down the grand marble staircase, every pair of eyes in the room locked onto us. Whispers erupted behind silk fans and champagne flutes:

“Who is she?”

“Is that the housekeeper from the Lake Forest estate?”

“Look at the emerald necklace—that’s the Moretti family heirloom!”

“She looks like royalty...”

Vincent ignored the murmurs entirely. He kept his stride measured and proud, his hand resting securely over mine on his arm. Every time someone of high status approached to offer their condolences regarding Sofia or congratulations on Isabella’s recovery, Vincent introduced me with unwavering respect:

“This is Clara Davis. The woman who holds my household, my heart, and my family together.”

The sheer authority in his voice silenced every potential sneer, replacing judgment with immediate, deferential respect. For the first time in my life, I wasn't walking in the shadows with a mop and a cleaning bucket; I was standing in the radiant center of high society, held by a man who treated me like a treasure.

Around ten o'clock, while Vincent was speaking with a prominent state senator near the VIP lounge, I stepped toward the terrace doors to catch a breath of fresh air.

“Quite a leap, isn't it, darling?” a slick, cold voice murmured from behind the heavy velvet curtains.

I turned around sharply.

A tall man with silvering hair, cold serpentine eyes, and a sharp scar running along his jawline stepped out of the shadows. He wore an immaculate tuxedo, but the aura around him was toxic, predatory, and suffocating.

Salvatore Leone.

My breath caught in my throat. I instinctively reached for the emergency panic button concealed within the clutch purse Vincent had given me.

“Don't bother with the little alarm, Miss Davis,” Salvatore said smoothly, showing his empty hands. “I’m not here to shoot anyone in a room filled with fifty federal agents. I simply wanted to see the little cleaning girl who brought down my ten-year operation with a single four-year-old’s whisper.”

I stood tall, refusing to let him see the terror clawing at my chest. “You had Sofia murdered. You threatened an innocent child. You are a monster, Salvatore.”

Salvatore sneered, taking half a step closer. “In our world, everyone is a monster, Miss Davis. Vincent Moretti is just better at pretending to be a gentleman. Do you really think a ruthless killer like Vincent will keep you around once the novelty wears off? You’re a maid. A domestic servant playing dress-up in dead Sofia’s jewelry.”

“She is the woman who will take everything from you,” a terrifying voice boomed from the doorway.

Salvatore’s sneer vanished instantly.

Vincent stepped onto the terrace. He didn't look like a host at a charity gala anymore. He looked like an apex predator that had just cornered his prey. Behind him, Marco and four armed operatives blocked every exit leading off the balcony.

“Salvatore,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal that even the brisk wind off Lake Michigan seemed to freeze. “You were foolish to come here.”

May you like

Salvatore backed toward the stone railing, his eyes darting frantically between the armed guards. “This is a public hotel, Vincent! You wouldn't dare start a war in front of the governor!”

“The war is already over, Salvatore,” Vincent said, stepping forward with lethal grace. “You lost the moment you laid a finger on my family.”
