Chapter 9 - My Mother Hid the Truth Inside a Book Nobody Wanted

I returned to our apartment before sunrise.

Dust covered the kitchen table.

The refrigerator hummed unevenly.

Everything looked painfully ordinary.

I opened my mother's crossword books.

There were eleven in the drawer.

Most held grocery lists between pages.

One contained dates written in red ink.

I compared them with the payment records.

They matched transfer dates exactly.

Beside each date stood a crossword clue number.

I followed the numbers across the pages.

The letters formed an address.

A storage locker near the train station.

Damon waited outside while I opened it.

Inside sat a blue suitcase.

The lock was rusted.

I used the key from Eleanor's envelope.

It turned on the second try.

The suitcase contained ledgers, photographs, and letters.

My mother had documented every stolen payment.

Grace had signed the earliest entries.

Eleanor's original donation records lay beneath them.

And at the bottom was a letter addressed to me.

My mother's handwriting filled three pages.

She explained why she had stayed silent.

Someone had threatened our family.

She had kept the evidence anyway.

I sat on the concrete floor.

My good hand covered my mouth.

For years, I thought she was merely surviving.

She had been protecting strangers too.

I carried the suitcase into daylight.

Damon reached for it.

I shook my head.

"I can carry this."

May you like

He nodded.

"Then I'll walk beside you."
