Chapter 11 - Damon Put His Own Family Name on the Evidence Table

Damon testified for nearly six hours.

I watched through the observation window.

He brought contracts signed by his father.

He disclosed payments that had benefited Blackwell companies.

He admitted he should have examined them sooner.

His attorney looked exhausted.

The prosecutor asked whether he understood the consequences.

"I do," Damon said.

He surrendered control of the disputed assets.

An independent trustee would oversee them.

Eleanor pledged to repay the charity losses.

Some reporters called it a publicity maneuver.

I watched Damon read their headlines.

He said nothing.

That evening, I asked whether he regretted helping.

"I regret not asking questions earlier."

I sat across from him.

"Then don't stop now."

He smiled faintly.

"You give difficult advice."

"I learned from difficult people."

We laughed.

It was the first easy moment in weeks.

My arm still hurt beneath its cast.

My mother remained missing.

Yet the walls around the conspiracy were breaking.

Leah called with another discovery.

The farmhouse had been abandoned.

But a vehicle registered to Vale had crossed a toll bridge.

Its destination was a small harbor.

The departure manifest listed three passengers.

One was an elderly woman requiring oxygen.

The vessel was scheduled to leave at dawn.

I looked at Damon.

"We're going to the harbor."
