Chapter 1 - The Broken Arm I Hid Upstairs—and the Name That Silenced Damon Blackwell

I heard my arm break before I felt the pain.
The sound was small.
A dry snap beneath Preston Caldwell's expensive watch.
I staggered against the library shelves.
He let go as though I had offended him.
"Look what you made me do."
Behind him, three men stood laughing.
I recognized none of their faces.
I recognized their kind.
Men who never heard the word no.
I escaped through the service corridor.
By the time I reached storage, blood soaked my sleeve.
My mother called from Saint Vincent's.
I watched her name flash across my screen.
I couldn't answer.
The ballroom downstairs held three hundred guests.
A string quartet played beneath the chandeliers.
I was supposed to replenish the champagne.
Instead, I pressed my broken arm against my ribs.
Then the storage door opened.
Damon Blackwell stepped inside.
"Kate. Turn around."
I hid my arm behind my back.
He looked at my sleeve.
His expression changed so little I nearly missed it.
"Show me."
"Please don't fire me."
"I won't."
His voice held no impatience.
That frightened me more than shouting.
When I showed him, he crouched nearby.
He did not touch me.
"Who did this?"
I told him Preston's name.
Damon called his doctor and security chief.
He promised my mother's hospital would be paid.
I didn't know whether to believe him.
Dr. Reyes wrapped my arm for transport.
Matteo collected the camera recordings.
I watched Damon study the doorway.
"There were others," I whispered.
"Tell me what you remember."
I described the men in the library.
One wore a silver pin shaped like a bird.
Damon stopped breathing for a moment.
"Are you certain?"
"I saw it when he blocked the door."
Damon turned toward Matteo.
"Lock down the east wing."
Matteo frowned.
"The senator is still downstairs."
"Then he can wait."
My phone vibrated again.
This time the screen displayed an unknown number.
A message appeared beneath it.
YOUR MOTHER ISN'T SAFE AT SAINT VINCENT'S.
I held the screen toward Damon.
May you like
For the first time, his face showed fear.
"Matteo," he said. "Call the hospital. Now."
