Chapter 7 - I Followed the Hospital Records Into a Charity Built on Stolen Money

The records led us through three states.
Every clinic had received generous public donations.
Every clinic also reported impossible expenses.
I spent hours matching invoices.
My mother had taught me bookkeeping years earlier.
She used to balance our grocery budget.
Now I searched for the same repeated numbers.
At first, the figures seemed random.
Then I found matching patient identifiers.
The same medical equipment had been billed repeatedly.
Payments flowed into Bluebird Holdings.
From there, money disappeared into shell companies.
Damon brought in forensic accountant Leah Park.
She checked my work without condescension.
"You're right," she said.
"This is a pattern."
Leah also found something worse.
Some patients had been billed after death.
I felt sick.
My mother had spent years trusting hospitals.
Those records turned suffering into profit.
We delivered copies to a federal prosecutor.
Damon surrendered his own company's files.
He insisted nothing be withheld.
That decision cost him two business partners.
It also earned Leah's trust.
Late that night, she called with news.
A payment had been made that afternoon.
The destination was a private nursing facility.
The patient name was false.
But the medication list matched my mother's.
I grabbed my coat.
Damon caught my eye.
May you like
"We go together."
This time, I believed him.
