Chapter 15 - The Maid Who Feared Losing Everything Finally Chose Her Own Future — The End

A year after the gala, I returned to the storage room.

The shelves had been replaced.

The floor smelled of fresh wood polish.

Sunlight entered through the narrow window.

I stood where I once hid my broken arm.

For a moment, I remembered the fear.

Then I heard footsteps.

Damon stopped at the doorway.

"Ready?" he asked.

I looked at the room once more.

"Yes."

We were leaving for the trust's anniversary dinner.

My mother would speak beside Grace.

Evelyn had invited the nurses.

Matteo was bringing his wife and daughter.

Eleanor had promised not to make a speech.

Nobody believed her.

Downstairs, my mother waited beside the car.

Her breathing had improved with treatment.

She still needed careful monitoring.

But she laughed more often.

She had returned to her crossword puzzles.

I had started a new job as patient advocate.

My salary came from an independent nonprofit.

I paid my own rent.

I chose my own hours.

No one held my mother's care over me.

Damon opened the car door.

"You know you never had to prove anything to me."

"I know."

I touched his hand.

"But I needed to prove it to myself."

At dinner, my mother read a short speech.

She thanked the people who refused silence.

She thanked the nurses who asked questions.

Then she looked at me.

"And my daughter, who kept going."

I wiped my eyes with a napkin.

Damon squeezed my hand beneath the table.

Later, we walked outside together.

The evening air smelled of rain.

"What happens now?" he asked.

I looked at the city lights.

For once, the future did not frighten me.

"We make our own choices," I said.

He leaned closer.

"Together?"

I kissed him before answering.

May you like

"Together."

THE END.
