Chapter 10 - The Senator Who Smiled at Dinner Tried to Destroy Every Witness

The evidence changed everything.

The prosecutor requested emergency warrants.

Investigators searched Bluebird offices before dawn.

Preston Caldwell stopped answering his phone.

His father held a televised press conference.

Senator Caldwell called the allegations a conspiracy.

He accused Damon of manufacturing evidence.

Then he mentioned my name.

I watched from Eleanor's sitting room.

The senator described me as an unreliable employee.

He called my injuries unfortunate but unrelated.

My face burned.

Eleanor turned off the television.

"You don't owe him your silence."

Leah found an account controlled by the senator's aide.

Payments connected him to the forged transfers.

Grace agreed to testify.

Evelyn supplied the hospital records.

I gave my statement in a quiet office.

The investigator asked whether I feared retaliation.

"Yes," I said.

"Will that change your testimony?"

"No."

The answer surprised me with its steadiness.

Later, Damon found me outside.

He held two cups of tea.

He set mine on the railing.

"You were extraordinary in there."

"I was terrified."

"I know."

He did not call fear weakness.

That mattered more than praise.

We stood together until the rain stopped.

For the first time, I could imagine tomorrow.
