Chapter 6 - The Santoro Clan Makes Their Terrifying Move

Three days passed in relative calm, but the peace was an illusion.

On Sunday morning, Sienna received a call on her secure estate phone from Dr. Miller at the private neurology center where her father had been transferred.

“Miss Moretti, your father had a minor respiratory episode this morning,” Dr. Miller said. “He’s stabilized now, but he’s asking for you repeatedly. He seems agitated.”

Panic seized Sienna. “I’m coming right now.”

She ran down to the garage, demanding a car. Dante intercepted her before she reached the SUV.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he demanded, his brow furrowed.

“My dad is sick! He’s asking for me! I have to see him, Dante!” Tears brimmed in her eyes. “Please. You promised he would be safe and that I could see him.”

Dante stared at her frantic face, the raw pain in her voice cutting through his hardened exterior. He nodded to Enzo. “Prep my personal armored motorcade. We go together.”

Ten minutes later, a three-vehicle convoy roared out of the estate gates, heading south toward the specialized clinic in Oak Brook.

The highway was slick with slush. As they entered an underpass beneath an interstate junction, the lead security vehicle suddenly erupted in a fireball.

A deafening explosion shook the concrete walls.

“Ambush!” Enzo shouted from the front seat, slamming on the brakes.

A massive dump truck rammed into the rear escort SUV, crushing it against the barrier and sealing them inside the underpass. From the shadows of the tunnel, eight masked gunmen armed with automatic rifles advanced on Dante’s vehicle, opening fire.

Bullets rained against the armored glass like hail, spiderwebbing the reinforced windshield.

“Get down on the floor!” Dante roared, shoving Sienna beneath his body to shield her.

His weight pressed her down against the leather seat. Sienna could feel the violent shudder of the vehicle under the gunfire, her ears ringing from the deafening barrage.

“Dante!” she screamed.

“Enzo, ram the side barrier! Get us out into the open!” Dante barked into his comms unit. He pulled a semi-automatic weapon from beneath his seat, his eyes turning to burning ice. “Hold on to me, Sienna!”
