Chapter 2 - The Ironclad Rules of the Valente Bloodlines

The silence in the library felt heavy enough to crush bone. Outside, the Chicago blizzard battered against bulletproof glass, throwing shadows across the dark cherrywood shelves.

“What do you mean, one way?” Sienna asked, clutching her thrifted coat around her shoulders like armor.

Dante stood up from the desk. He stood a full head taller than her, broad-shouldered and radiating dangerous authority. “If I announce that you were an accidental bystander, Rocco Santoro will slit your throat in your sleep just to prove he can strike within my circle. But if you are my fiancée—publicly, officially, untouchably—any attack on you is a declaration of total war that the Five Families will not tolerate.”

“You want me to marry you?” Sienna laughed, but the sound cracked with hysteria. “I don't even know you! I serve pancakes for eight dollars an hour!”

“You will not actually marry me in a church tomorrow,” Dante replied, his voice devoid of warmth. “You will play the role. You will move into this house. You will wear the ring, attend the galas, and smile for the cameras. In exchange, your father will be moved to the finest private neurological clinic in the country, fully paid for, with round-the-clock private security.”

Sienna’s breath hitched. “You would do that for my dad?”

“I protect what is mine. If you are under my name, your blood is my responsibility.” Dante pulled a thick document from a leather folio and laid it on the desk. “This is a non-disclosure and protection covenant. Three months. After we dismantle the Santoro threat, we stage a quiet, amicable breakup. You walk away with five million dollars in a blind trust and a clean slate.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then I assign two guards to follow you back to your Pilsen apartment,” Dante said plainly. “And within forty-eight hours, I will be attending your funeral.”

Lucia stepped forward, placing a gentle, warm hand on Sienna’s shoulder. “Sienna, child. Look at me. Dante is ruthless, but he is a man of his word. You saved my life today. Let us save yours.”

Sienna looked at the heavy pen resting on the desk. Her father’s medical bills were already three months past due; the state facility had threatened to transfer him to an overcrowded county ward. She had no money, no leverage, and nowhere to run.

She picked up the pen and signed her name in trembling script.

“Good,” Dante said, picking up the document without a trace of emotion. “Rule number one: You do not leave this estate without an armed escort. Rule number two: You do not speak to the press. Rule number three: In public, you look at me as if I am the only man on earth. Do you understand?”

May you like

“Crystal clear,” Sienna spat back, meeting his icy stare with a defiance that surprised them both.

Dante’s eyes narrowed slightly, an unexpected spark flickering in their depths. “We’ll see how long that spine lasts, Miss Moretti.”
