Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Crystal Ballroom and the Fall of Evan Mercer

Evan charged forward, his hand raising as if to strike her across the face as he had done so many times in their childhood home. “You put Dad in a cage! You ruined Mercer Freight! I’m going to tear that fancy dress off your—”

Evan’s wrist never reached Claire.

Gabriel moved with blinding, terrifying speed. His massive hand caught Evan’s wrist in mid-air, squeezing with enough crushing force that the sound of grinding bone echoed across the silent ballroom.

Evan let out a high-pitched, agonizing shriek, dropping instantly to his knees on the polished parquet floor.

“You speak to her with respect,” Gabriel said, his voice deathly quiet, “or I will remove your tongue in front of every judge in Cook County.”

Gabriel didn't look at Evan; he looked at Claire, granting her the floor.

Claire looked down at her brother kneeling in agony on the floor. For twenty years, this man had made her feel small, disgusting, and utterly unworthy of love or respect.

“I didn't steal four million dollars, Evan,” Claire said, her voice ringing out across the vast ballroom, clear, articulate, and completely devoid of fear. “You and Richard did.”

The elite crowd leaned in, hanging on every word.

“You created eleven dummy accounts under Obsidian Maritime Holdings,” Claire continued, her tone clinical, ruthless, and devastating. “You funneled four million one hundred thousand dollars out of Mercer Freight to cover your illegal sports gambling debts in Macau and Dante Moretti’s contraband corridors in Gary.”

Gasps rippled across the room. Several city council members subtly stepped away from Dante Moretti.

Claire reached into a small silk clutch and produced an encrypted flash drive, holding it up for the entire room to see.

“On this drive are the full digital ledger backups, the deleted server logs from Tuesday night, and the audio recording of Richard Mercer admitting to framing me before Gabriel Vale’s men took him into custody.”

Evan was weeping in pain, his forehead pressed against the floor as Gabriel continued to hold his shattered wrist. “Claire... please... we’re family...”

“You stopped being my family the moment you threw me onto a concrete floor and told a man to shoot me so you could catch a flight to Miami,” Claire said with chilling finality.

She turned her eyes across the ballroom and locked onto Dante Moretti, who was standing frozen by the bar.

“And as for Obsidian Maritime,” Claire announced, her hazel eyes piercing Moretti’s cold facade, “the master cryptographic keys in my possession have already decrypted your container manifests for tomorrow night at Port District Four. Federal customs agents and the Vale logistics task force are currently seizing all eight hundred tons of your contraband.”

Moretti’s face twisted into an expression of sheer murderous fury.

Two plainclothes federal agents, accompanied by Marcus and four of Gabriel’s security team, stepped through the grand double doors.

“Evan Mercer,” one of the federal agents announced, flashing his badge. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and interstate money laundering.”

Gabriel released Evan’s ruined wrist like a piece of worthless trash. The agents hauled the sobbing, hysterical Evan to his feet, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists and dragging him out of the ballroom in full view of the city’s high society.

Claire stood tall, the emerald on her throat catching the golden light of the chandeliers.

Gabriel stepped beside her, sliding his arm around her waist, pulling her firmly against his side. He raised his champagne glass to the stunned room.

“To new beginnings,” Gabriel declared, his dark voice commanding the absolute silence of the room. “And to the new Chief Operating Officer of the Vale Logistics Conglomerate: Claire Mercer.”

The room erupted into thunderous, hesitant applause, cementing Claire’s total triumph over the family that had tried to destroy her.
